Thrift at Home

A Record of What I Make. Friday, August 7, 2015. Some friends asked us to tend their garden, and we got more green beans than we could eat. I blanched them and the children put them through the bean frencher (with complaining, until they figured out their rhythm). Still had more beans, because now our little backyard patch began producing. I wanted to make some dill pickles. I also made some batches of pizza sauce. The side of our house functions like a messy garage sometimes. It's more cleaned up (t...

Thrift at Home: These Cookies Made Me Turn On the Oven

http://thriftathome.blogspot.com/2012/07/these-cookies-made-me-turn-on-oven.html

A Record of What I Make. Friday, July 13, 2012. These Cookies Made Me Turn On the Oven. My husband and I have a little tug-of-war about cooking in the summer. He doesn't like any cooking heat in the house at all. I do my best, but honestly, we have to eat something besides cold cereal (which I do not consider a meal). I suggest you blast your cool comfort with some oven heat and make them. Those are cocoa powder lumps - I stirred it in by hand - my mistake. Cream together in a mixing bowl:. Stir dry ingr...

Thrift at Home: Our Standard Summer Supper

http://thriftathome.blogspot.com/2015/07/our-standard-summer-supper.html

A Record of What I Make. Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Our Standard Summer Supper. When the corn comes in, I usually pick up a dozen at least once a week and that's supper. I add a real vegetable (corn is a starch in my menu planning) and a protein. Here we had panzanella. My big kids husk the corn. Then I either grill it. Or use the grill burner to boil it. Pretty fast and there's no heat added to the kitchen. This evening we're having grilled corn, green beans with brown butter, and caprese salad. We have a ...

Thrift at Home: My Kitchen is Not a Creperie

http://thriftathome.blogspot.com/2010/05/my-kitchen-is-not-creperie.html

A Record of What I Make. Monday, May 3, 2010. My Kitchen is Not a Creperie. I tried again with crepes, after being inspired here. But I just don't love crepes. I don't hate them, but I don't see the point. Why not just pancakes for breakfast or tortillas to roll stuff up in? Should I try sweet? So sorry they didnt work out for you. I love your honesty, though! May 3, 2010 at 10:20 PM. I dont even know where to start. But back to crepes: Yes- try the sweet stuff! There are many other variations- -lemon ju...

Thrift at Home: June 2015

http://thriftathome.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

A Record of What I Make. Thursday, June 25, 2015. This post slides onto the thrifty blog by saying that you don't need to buy electronics to entertain. Phoebe is better than a screen, but there are several considerations: her sound cannot be muted and she requires care and feeding even when no one feels like watching TV. So the thrifty thing to do is borrow a baby, yes? Under the arch of toys, looking in the mirror. Photo by Genevieve - the first Phoebe smile we managed to capture on camera! Which I'm su...

Bacon-Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese – The Catholic Table

https://thecatholictable.com/2015/04/29/bacon-jalapeno-macaroni-and-cheese

Prayer. Food. Conversation. And Wine. Lots of Wine. About “The Catholic Table”. About Emily Stimpson Chapman. Food and the Spiritual Life. Bacon-Jalapeño Macaroni and Cheese. April 29, 2015. April 29, 2015. That slice of heaven, my friends, is what you get when you combine a bunch of fancy cheeses, leftover from your 40th birthday party…. With six sultry slices of applewood smoked bacon…. And the spicy, savory, ever-so-slightly sour goodness that also goes by the name “pickled jalapeños.”. Prep Time: 45 ...

Somehow We Manage: Kindergarten, here we come!

http://www.somehowwemanage.com/2014/08/kindergarten-here-we-come.html

Kindergarten, here we come! I've been to two rehearsal dinners this summer, and at both, the parents recalled how fast time went. One day they are born; the next they are off to kindergarten. It's true. I blinked, and now I've got a school boy. I love this boy. I like. This last pic is Stephen and his good buddy, proud as pie on their first day. We are so thankful for good friends making the transition with us. To be expected, I cried a few tears in my second cup of coffee on the way home. Should write a...

Somehow We Manage: Kitchen Tips

http://www.somehowwemanage.com/2015/08/kitchen-tips.html

Here's my farmer's market goods for this week. $19.50 total. All this would have been twice as much at the grocery store. I recently learned a tip about cutting boards. If you have one that slides - which I do - put a slightly damp paper towel under it to give it some grip. It holds the board perfectly in place. I love these Pure Kamachi. I love this box of sandwiches idea. This time I made turkey with light mayo and some pimento cheese. Between each layer of sandwiches, I placed a barely damp pa...There...

Somehow We Manage: Yellow In Small Doses

http://www.somehowwemanage.com/2015/06/yellow-in-small-doses.html

Yellow In Small Doses. I like yellow, in small doses. Over the weekend I took a can of yellow spray paint and got after these frames for the baby's room. One was white, one was brown. So now they are a matching yellow for these Runaway Bunny. Illustrations I ripped out of one of our multiple copies. And this little yellow foot stool is one of those life changing epiphanies. I bought it from JoAnn's for $20. It was sturdy, raw wood, and Stephen said he could not make it for less than $20. I make a mean pe...

The Joyful House: June 2016

A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it." -George Moore. Wednesday, June 29, 2016. What Gets Passed Along. Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Tidbits from the Week. So I'm going to "away" from the blog for a while, but I leave with a few tidibts:. I have finally reached the point where I have an Alabama Chanin jersey dress option for nearly every day of the "work" week. By the end of the summer, I hope to have a dress for every day of the entire week! After the Vacation B...

Emily and Matt: June 2011

http://emilynmatt.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 17, 2011. This is me, the girl I used to be. The girl that opted for a large McDonald's Triple Thick Chocolate Shake over a Skinny Cow ice cream bar. I'm struggling with letting go of this girl. I look in the mirror and I see someone completely different. But inside, sometimes, I still feel. Like her. I know that I don't. I know I'm wearing pants that are 4 sizes smaller than that. Make me go back to the beginning. To her. I can't go back to her. EVER. E.V.E.R. Tuesday, June 7, 2011. I read ...

Emily and Matt: August 2011

http://emilynmatt.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, August 30, 2011. We had a really rough storm a few weeks back - it brought with it much needed rain, but also very high winds. This is the part of storms that makes me sad! I *LOVE* weather, the more exciting the better, but when it comes to damage.especially on your property,. Then it's no fun. This was a limb approx. 15 feet long that was resting halfway on the top of our house! Thankfully, it didn't fall too far and thus didn't result in any damage. Sometimes we just need a change of scenery.
