Through my eye

A sometimes caustic view of things. Sunday, December 23, 2012. An inconvenient Second Amendment essay. I keep hearing an argument that the Second Amendment should not apply to modern weapons because it was written when armies used muskets and civilians also used muskets, therefore it should mean that "the right to bear arms" applies only to muskets. Here is the text:. Lastly, "shall not be infringed." Infringement means the same now as it did then. A breaking of a pact or contract, a restriction,...That ...

Through my eye: July 2005

http://throughmyeye.blogspot.com/2005_07_01_archive.html

A sometimes caustic view of things. Sunday, July 17, 2005. TIME TO QUIT PLAYING NICE. A number of right-wing American critics are perfectly correct in saying that we can’t separate religion from the war on terrorism. They are incorrect when they imply or state that Islam is less tolerant than Christianity. You’ll soon learn that you are misguided, mistaken, and condemned because of your choice of religion. The Islamic world is several generations from accepting any form of alternate spirituality on any b...

Through my eye: Paris Food

http://throughmyeye.blogspot.com/2007/09/paris-food.html

A sometimes caustic view of things. Friday, September 14, 2007. Funny, I've successfully avoided eating odd things all over europe- but now, in the most civilized city in the world (by their own estimate), I've gone down new paths of cuisine inadvertantly- twice. Now, I knew not to order tartar, which generally looks like raw hamburger and appears to make it possible to digest all the gristle that French beef seems to have- at least in the cuts I can afford. It took a long time to finish, however, becaus...

A sometimes caustic view of things. Saturday, September 15, 2007. In the deep south- of France. Southern France is as distinct as all the other regions of France. To some extent it is more than one region because of the variations in dialect sometimes a whole language Occitan , for example, as different from French as Catalan is from Castilian Spanish. Nimes: My Roman Amphitheater is bigger than yours. Arles: Mine is prettier. But each city was a revelation all its own, even if there were similarities&#4...

A sometimes caustic view of things. Thursday, August 14, 2008. Soldier, ask not. Notes during latter days:. Read Message to Garcia and How I delivered the message to Garcia and some commentary about the theme of obedience to orders versus the questioning of orders. But no man or woman is an automaton, and orders that fall outside the parameters of one’s training may be questioned perhaps of necessity for a variety of reasons. Posted by Griffin @ 10:51 AM. Through my eye: August 2007

http://throughmyeye.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

A sometimes caustic view of things. Sunday, August 12, 2007. Vienna, Austria to Paris and Barcelona. Mark Twain had much to say about relics in Europe when he toured here 150 years ago. Something like "if all the pieces of the true cross were gathered together, you'd have enough wood to heat a cabin in Nevada for the winter." If he didn't say that, I apologize, but I'm certain he addressed the subject in like manner. Actually, I'm beginning to have enough of museums. Our next stop is Innsbruck. The route...

Seminars: The Tao of Survival. Dancing The Night Away. Time’s River →. Night Train to Istanbul, and Beyond. April 9, 2014. We departed the Bulgarian village during one of those still midwinter nights when sounds are muffled, the lanes deserted and you listen for the cracking twig, the stealthy footstep, the jackal’s howl. New tracks for high-speed trains were under construction, so we could not enter Istanbul through its classic train station in the center of the old city. The conductor dumped us wit...

Seminars: The Tao of Survival. Night Train to Istanbul, and Beyond. News From the Road →. May 17, 2014. Time’s river seems to be running fast this year. It feels as if we only recently arrived in Turkey, but actually we’ve been here almost five months. When we visit ancient cities, which are as common here as shopping centers in Los Angeles, time does seems to run more slowly. The ancient stones have a life of their own, and they tell of lives past, earthquakes and invasions, and many long centuries.

Tuesday, November 25, 2014. I don't get good sleeps sometimes. I lose my appetite sometimes. I break down more often this year than ever especially in front of my own family but I take that as something good in a way because I now allow myself to express what I feel without hiding anything, but sometimes it may come off as being immature as it may seem like I am not really capable to manage my emotions. Despite what happens, I know I have people and a refuge that I can turn to. I am genuinely glad to be ...

I was a bar chatting, drinking, laughing with friends and the night before I met Max. I kept thinking about this 25-year-old I would meet the next day. Exactly a month younger than me, in assisted living in Portland because football and a bad helmet robbed him of a normal life. So too bright, and too early on Wednesday Mark Baker and I jumped in my car and drove to Portland, to see Max.
