The Tomales Town Hall’s strong tradition of volunteerism goes back to its beginning in 1874. The Hall was built on land donated for the purpose by Tomales pioneer Warren Dutton, and has been owned and operated by the community for all its years. The building’s 1931 enlargement and remodel was accomplished after four years of fundraising, and most of the work was accomplished by volunteer labor. Or call (707) 878-2006. The village of Tomales was born in the middle of the 19. Century, primarily because of its proximity to the then-navigable estuary of Tomales Bay as a shipping port. The estuary eventually silted in so that ocean-going boats could no longer navigate it, and Tomales was probably saved from devolving into a ghost town by the narrow gauge, North Pacific Coast Railroad (1875 1930).
