RAMS RAVENS AND WRECKS : BIG MEN ON BIG SHIPS

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Saturday, 3 January 2015. BIG MEN ON BIG SHIPS. Wargamer Tom Young has some fine photos of a whole fleet of Trieres in 28mm? Scale on his blog 'Tides of War'. He has done a scenario based on the battle of Notium in 407BC - the one where the orders 'Do nothing' got reinterpreted as 'Here's the fleet, have fun while I'm away'. Nice photos of very nice painted epibatai. And a small horde of ships.

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Saturday, 29 November 2014. Having taken the plunge, received a flock of minute trieres from Outpost Wargame Services. The initial impression was that I had given up detailed card models for something that was really a marker rather than a model. Closer inspection proved this to be a false impression. The whole fleet of 150 trieres cost a satisyingly slight 300 Kr - 28 pounds. I painted them wit...

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Monday, 20 October 2014. A BEACH IS LIFE. In ancient naval battles commanders sometimes actually chose to run their ships in to the shore as a tactic. This seems, at first, rather puzzling. Why should ships throw away their mobility to fight? How could they cast themselves ashore which is what good navigators try to avoid, isn't it? Time and tide wait for no ship'. When it was time to depart the...

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Tuesday, 9 December 2014. I CAN SEE FOR MILES AND MILES AND MILES . Genius, but nevertheless a Steve Reeves fan. In 373BC the Athenians sent a force led by Iphikrates to support their allies the Kerkyrans against the active and threatening Spartan commander Mnasippus who had besieged their city. One of the surprising things about the Spartan dominance in matters military is revealed by reading w...

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Saturday, 11 October 2014. Anyway, it is still nice to hear tales of coincidence and serendipity. Despite my adult knowledge of statistics and the human brain's inate ability, or even persistent habit, of finding patterns where they may not even exist. Wow my new girlfriend loves so many of the same things I do! So did the last one.). Points to the peasants failure. Amongst the goods is a tr...

The Trireme (Greek trieres. Was the state of the art fighting ship designed to be able to cover long distances quickly under oar and sail, and in battle to ram enemy ships with devastating effect. Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Wednesday, 19 November 2014. SIZE MATTERS IN ANOTHER WAY. The rules for trieres battles I have been developing for some time have a horrible tendency to lead themselves over a cliff now and again. Some logical progression results in undermining the basic principles they are built upon. I think I have a good handle on what trieres combat was all about and one thing it requires is space. Even ...

Naval Warfare with Ancient Galleys : Card model ships, wargame rules and the background for their development. Monday, 15 September 2014. ERMENT 1.1 NOW IN COLOUR. To celebrate 30,000 hits here is the Erment ship with colour. The paint is different oxides. Unglazed. The deck troops will have bronze spears and the kybernetes. This is a first attempt and I will make a full-size one soon. A few oars did not survive firing and my handling. Before painting to make the colours even brighter! Just a nice illust...
