At midnight we stopped on an old bridge overlooking the Rhine. Crowds of people lined the shore below setting off fireworks, which lit up the sky despite the dense fog. It was great to sit in that old train watching the explosions, the fog hiding the modern city below making one imagine the city looked as it did when that train was built.
