What Is Type 1 Diabetes? What is type 1 diabetes? Simply put, it's a disease in which the body doesn't produce any insulin of its own, so the person with diabetes must get insulin through a syringe or insulin pump. Although T1D is sometimes referred to as juvenile diabetes, this name is misleading (and for that reason, it’s finally falling into disuse). Nobody "outgrows" this disease.
