The DTs: January 2012
http://kotdbthedeetees.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 29 January 2012. Teaching a class on Friday and it wasn't going very well. It's was pretty flat and the kids weren't really adding much to the discussions or questions we were having. Those lessons are hard work especially when you have already taught the same lesson three times that week and had better results. The shape of the backboard of my mobile phone holder will be.". The rest of the kids at the table burst out laughing at the thought of this and the boy is quick to stop them. Suddenly a l...

The DTs: September 2012
http://kotdbthedeetees.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Friday, 21 September 2012. A new school year. A new term. Three weeks old. Summer a distant dream. A dream time when I was a real person. A human being. A time when time itself stretched out endlessly in front of me. No need to rush. No need to do anything at all. Gone. No more. This weekly moment, I realise, is like surviving a tsunami. Your home is destroyed and your family washed to sea and you are left sitting on the beach in the rubble and debris. Two days to recover it all before it starts again.

The DTs: May 2015

Tuesday, 26 May 2015. My additions and anecdotes have come down to the odd scrawled sentence on a post it note that languishes in my wallet. Sometimes I look at it and have no idea what the sentence refers to. I'm about it get it out and have a look now so hopefully there is something of interest there otherwise this may be my last post for a year or so. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Saturday, 27 September 2014. Bob's law of DT states that if a project goes on long enough, without frequent reminder of the brief, the probability that a student will produce a design which incorporates their initials increases. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). This blog is an attempt to record some of the more amusing and light hearted moments of teaching Design and Technology to 11-16 year olds in London. Hopefully in writing these down I will a) remember them and b) by remembering them not go insane.

The DTs: February 2013

Sunday, 17 February 2013. Saturday, 9 February 2013. The blue coat the I use for practical lessons has had an overhaul. It's been pimped. It now includes pieces of flair. If you've ever seen the film Office Space. You'll know what I'm on about. If you haven't then you really should. Anyway the textiles teachers were given a massive bucket full of buttons and we were looking through them and having a laugh about customising my jacket with them. Look back in this blog for some other glorious answers here.

Monday, 17 February 2014. Anyway he had been messing around as per usual. The other students took great pleasure in telling me of his predicament and of course I made a big deal of telling them to fetch me a hacksaw and a chisel etc. He looked suitably scared. Ultimately however he was released from his metallic shackles without the need for amateur surgery but not before we had the following exchange:. Me: "You shouldn't have been sticking your finger in the vice anyway should you? Him: "I didn't sir".

Thursday, 31 January 2013. Start of the working day sharpening pencils DT style. So since I started teaching some five years ago the language in the classroom has changed a great deal. Phrases come and go and some remain. Currently the phrases I hear a lot are:. Words that are new:. Jarrin" Like jarring. "Oh your sister is in my form class. Do you get on with her? No way she's jarrin'". Yeh it was Peeeeeeeeak bruv". Wavy" A good thing. Calm" A good thing. As an aside to this story one student had consume...

Friday, 10 February 2012. A simple and beautiful piece of symmetry. It's finally here. That sweet moment when the holidays arrive. Part of the reason that we started to be teachers in the first place. That promise of a week off here, a couple of weeks off there. Sweet joy. The stuff they write down on their coursework is a damn disgrace though. Total gibberish on the whole. Shocking and painful and worrying and laughably hilarious all at the same time. Monday, 6 February 2012. Sometimes when a lesson is ...
