The broom makers' craft was still practised until the 1950's around Verwood. Birch handles were rammed into skilfully constructed heads of heather or birch to make a long lasting practical tool. Quick Index (site map).

The claylands around Verwood were good for coppices, woods of hazel which were cut down every seven to fifteen years for wood which was used for hurdle making and thatching spars. Quick Index (site map).

Verwood is on the edge of many things:. Right on the boundary between the counties of Dorset and Hampshire; on the edge of the New Forest (but not part of it); and only just into agriculture because the land is so poor. Although divided from the New Forest by the big valley of the River Avon (the county boundary), the Verwood area is really very similar to the New Forest. Pots, brooms and hurdles from the heathland. Pots, brooms and hurdles from the heathland. Explored the huge network of industries on the East Dorset heathlands, industries which used the coppiced and heathland trees not only to make besom brooms, hurdles, rakes and so on but also as fuel for the local earthenware kilns. The last of the kilns, Cross Roads, closed in 1952 and the exhibition commemmorated this fiftieth anniversary. More pictures of the exhibition are on-line. The exhibition has now closed.

The Verwood and District Potteries Trust was set up seventeen years ago by a group of ordinary people who wanted to investigate the east Dorset pottery industry.
