Fishing on this stretch can at times be excellent with massive shoals of big bream in residence along the entire length, location of these shoals, however, it can at times be difficult. Those anglers that do find them are rewarded with large nets of fish as they are easily caught on conventional methods. As with the Exwick stretch of the Exe, there have been reports of barbel being caught immediately below the Weir. As per the Association handbook.

Downstream from Head Weir (adjacent to the Mill on the Exe pub) and through the town stretch (Shillhay) there are plenty of fish present from jack’s to low doubles with the occasional twenty. Sadly, this area is very rarely fished; this being due to its central location, concrete banks and the many people, bikes, boats, swans, ducks, seagulls, geese, dogs and kids that also frequent the area! Both of these rivers are relatively under fished waters despite their close proximity to Exeter and the quality fishing available on the two adjoining rivers. There are anglers who take advantage of the fact that both waters are extremely close to each other and walk across the small field separating the waters and fish either the faster flowing Exe or the slower moving Creedy.
