Moliagul is also famous as the birthplace of Rev. John Flynn, who later set up the Royal Flying Doctors Service, providing medical care to the remote areas of Australia. Opposite the John Flynn Memorial are the remains of the Flynn home. The drive to the top of Mt Moliagul provides a panoramic view of the area. N 1851 the large parcel of land named the Charlotte Plains Run, was divided with the land on the West side of the Loddon River called Janevale . It is believed that the name Laanecoorie came from the aboriginal word Ladnagoorie, meaning a long water hole. Crossing the Loddon River was by punt, downstream from the Janevale Bridge until the first bridge was opened in 1872. When the Laanecoorie Weir broke its bank in 1909 the bridge was destroyed.

The Silke family has been traced back to 1607 in Somerset, England. John Gill Silke, who was born in 1805, wed Ann Date in 1832 and the couple began married life as tenant farmers. N 1853 Gold was found at Sandy Creek, Tarnagulla, and in 1859 at Inglewood, this in turn brought a large increase in the population of the area. The rich quarts had to be transported by horse teams to the Government Battery at Tarnagulla. With the only bridge over the Bullabul Creek located on what is now the Calder Highway, this made a tedious long journey to the Tarnagulla Battery. The information Board at the Arnold Hall provides interesting information on the early days of Arnold.

Old was discovered here in 1860. Luke Huset and Peter Mawson sank a shaft called the New Chum Mine. The area became known as New Chum and also Maiden Town. The large Welsh mining community renamed it Llanelly after a little town near Cardiff in South Wales. The little town made a big surge forward in the mid to late 1860s when the New Chum and Sandstone Reefs were in their hey-days. With the large population, the Tarnagulla police were often hard pressed to keep the peace on Saturday nights.
