Rhena Tantisunthorn: August 2011
http://rhenatan.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
In which I write. Thursday, August 18, 2011. Nice, Smart, or Athletic? This morning was the perfect weather - clear, sunny skies, cool breezes - for a trip to the Como Zoo. A trip to the zoo with a toddler is sort of like shepherding. Shepherds might disagree, but ensuring the physical safety of a toddler can be fairly mindless. It gives me a lot of time to think. I spent a good deal of my time reflecting on this conversation that my husband and I have from time to time. Smart? But what about nice? The t...

In which I write. Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Writer's Space: Jane McLoughlin. There's a little bookstore on the other side of South Minneapolis called The Wild Rumpus. Where chickens peck freely and cats loll between stacks of books on the front window display. The front door has a child-sized door within the adult-sized one. Needless to say, Little A loves it and when I tell her that we're going to the bookstore, she asks, "tiny door? Yes, A, tiny door. By Minnesota-born, UK transplant Jane McLoughlin.

Rhena Tantisunthorn: Harried Housewife Bread
http://rhenatan.blogspot.com/2012/03/harried-housewife-bread.html
In which I write. Tuesday, March 13, 2012. And so that vision has largely remained where it belongs: in my head. Until, that is, I came across this recipe. Via pinterest) for a super simple crusty and yet soft bread baked in a cast iron pot. It's so easy, even I did it. Here's the rundown (more details including lots of pictures and advice on how to make it fancier and what types of pots to use on the link above):. Whisk together 3 cups flour with 1 3/4 t salt, 1/2 t salt in a large mixing bowl. But it w...

Rhena Tantisunthorn: My MINE! Phase
http://rhenatan.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-mine-phase.html
In which I write. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. For a day or so, two-year-old A has been dragging around a copy of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and insisting, "My book.". The first few times she declared it "hers" and started paging through it, my husband and I were charmed and our thoughts, comments, and questions showed it. What do you think the impact of the first person point-of-view is on the reader-narrator relationship? Mostly A responded with "My book! A screamed. She arched her back...

In which I write. Thursday, July 28, 2011. Pilot Design Rocks My Mantel. and My World. The conversation went something like this:. Me: "We need something to fill that space over the mantel piece.". Husband: "Yeah. Also, what time is it? Me: "We need a clock in here too.". And then we bumped into each other and we were all, "You put your chocolate in my peanut butter! And "Your peanut butter's on my chocolate.". Not really. But it might as well have. Wednesday, July 27, 2011. This is a log. An oak log...

Rhena Tantisunthorn: February 2012
http://rhenatan.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
In which I write. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. I recently came across a book (which will remain nameless) that I'm having a really hard time getting into. I think it's ultimately a question of it being fairly dense and a lot of the "story" is given as "information." (It's a novel.). But I'm compelled to carry on. I keep telling myself that I just need to give it a little more time - the story and characters will sink inside and I won't be able to put it down. I've added a poll to my blog (look! In the cou...

Rhena Tantisunthorn: Writer's Space: Cris Beam
http://rhenatan.blogspot.com/2012/03/writers-space-cris-beam.html
In which I write. Friday, March 9, 2012. Writer's Space: Cris Beam. I am obsessed by the spaces in which writers do their work. I'm going to feed this obsession by posting regular (short) interviews with writers about their latest projects, their future projects, the writing life, and, finally, where they create and craft. I emailed a few times with Cris Beam. The young adult novel I Am J. And most recently, the memoir Mother, Stranger. Falls the Shadow: The Crisis of American Foster Care. Your work incl...
