At the first lock ‘le Grand Carre', a 95m commercial barge ‘Benlove' follows us in and shows, with its stove in bows, that commercial skippers can get things wrong as well as amateurs. Just into Belgium and we spotted an unusual train of 10 or so horse drawn carriages. We planned our route with options through France or Belgium from Lille to Erquelinnes. October - Port de Lille to Canal de la Somme. The Somy boiler failed in Douai so our few relaxing days became a round of trying to buy parts locally, which we couldn't do, followed by further trouble shooting and finally success. It all started with dirty fuel filters, followed by bleeding and eventually (we think) the poor fuel supply lead to carbon deposits on the sparker electrodes which stopped them igniting the fuel. We felt pretty good when we did solve it though.

Getting Waterdog out of her corner berth in the marina is always difficult because of shallows behind our berth and other boats to avoid damaging, so it's a relief when we can set off on the canal. Erquelinnes to Namur May 2011. We came out of the lock and had to go between the red buoy and the sloping wall; there wasn’t much room but Lorna guided Waterdog through just fine. We touched bottom again at the shallowest point.

WATERDOG c. 1876. 89' x 15'11" (27m x 4.85m) Humber Trading Barge. The black and white photo above is from Waterdog's trading days on the Humber, Trent and Aire and Calder. She is pictured near Pollington Lock in the 1950s or 1960s. So our cruising plans had to be scaled back so we could cope.
