I'm drawn to still life images because of their focus on a domestic world. These images get us to pay more attention to the things we come into contact with every day, things small enough to hold in our hands. Above: Gerhard Richter "Roses", 1994, Oil on Canvas. Above: Nicholas de Stael (1914-1955), The Shelf. Above: Juan de Zubaran (1620-1649), Still Life with Plate of Apples and Orange Blossom, 1640. Above: Laura Letinsky, Untitled 54. Above: Mary Potter (1900-1981), " Golden Kipper. You'll find one of...

INTERIOR PORTRAITS (at home). 1873-1962), "The Chintz Couch", 1910-11, Tate Collection. I'd never heard of Ethel Sands till I came across this painting. I was really taken with it. the way the light shimmers and the texture of the wall is so compelling. Above: Ethel Sands "The Dressing Room". Sands is clearly influenced by Vuillard. Above: Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940), Interior, 1902. What I love about this painting are the thick white lines of paint on the floor and French doors. Above: Richard Walker "...

SECRET GARDENS OF THE EAST VILLAGE. In New York's East Village I've discovered some wonderful places. They're community gardens, lush green parks that you come upon so unexpectedly. The scale of these gardens makes it easy to find quiet corners to be in. Unlike Central Park with it's grand vistas these gardens make you feel as though you discovered a secret world. About the tradition of community gardening in New York, which I've excerpted here:. Liz Christy in her garden. Photo by Donald Loggins. By the...

These figures above and below embody some things I love about the city. The creative use of stock construction materials, the entrepreneurial energy of the city, the art of making something from what might be detritus. (If you've seen my post about community gardens in NY you'll know how much of a draw that is to me! This group of brick figures has so much gusto. The artist is Ramiro Chaves. And I came across his work at the Material Art Fair. Above: A figure at the Anahuacalli Museum. The museum is buil...

Photo by Imogen Cunningham "The Unmade Bed" 1957. With that in mind, here are some images that might help you think about the bed you'd wish to spend your time in. Above: I like the hidden placement of this bed. The use of a subtle but rich color is very graphic. This is in Bellinter House. A Manor hotel outside of Dublin. Above: Scene from "It Happened One Night". Of the Bed-In up on youtube. Above: Another couple in bed.Laurel and Hardy. Photo by Stellan Herner. Photo by Ricardo Labougle for World of I...

Any surface can be a desk for a moment, but I've found the desire to create the perfect place to work has inspired some great design. The desk above is not meant to be a place owned by anyone, but rather a shared place, designed by Charlotte Perriand for the Hotel du Doron, Meribel-les-Allues, France, in 1947. Above: In another sort of shared space, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed these desks as part of the Mackintosh Library in the Glasgow School of Art. BOATS AT SOUTH WILLARD CREATIVE GROWTH. About a year ago my husband, Steven, came across a couple of intricately detailed ceramic boats at Creative Growth. In Oakland, on the desk of Creative Growth's director Tom di Maria. Steven brought them home, and showed them to our friend Ryan Conder, who has a gallery and clothing store called South Willard. On 3rd St., in Hollywood. They thought this work, by Robert Rapson, would make a great show. Except as noted I've taken the photos. Above: The Sea Princess.
