Saturday, January 24, 2009. In the center of the town plot there was laid out a space containing four acres and forty one perches of ground. The space was diamond-shaped. This diamond formed a part of the common, or public, undivided lands of the township of Wilkes-Barre, together with what now is know as River Common. Public Square to Washington. Saturday, February 7, 2009. Back to East Market. On East Market Street, on the south side, was the old stone jail. Also the residence of Enoch Ogden, a shoemaker, and William A. George, the Court Crier and High Constable. (James A. Gordon). The only buildings on East Market street were the Jail on the south side near Washington street, its stone wall extending half way to the square, built in 1802 and demolished in 1873. From the settlement of the town, and until nealy fifty years ago, the "Wilkes-Barre Burying Ground" (so called by inhabitants and so designated on the town plot) occupied the north side of Market street from Washington street to Canal street. now Pennsylvania avenue, and extended north one third of the distance to Union street. The population was about 1,200, and we seldom met strangers or those we did not know at least by sight. Houses were of frame, two stories in height, and the style of living much plainer than now. Tuesday, January 5, 2010. Centre Street east of the Square lead to Wilkes-Barre's burying ground. Purchased in 1772 for £9 10d, it extended from later day Washington Street to later day Canal Street to and from Centre Street half way to Union. The land fronting the north side of Centre Street was owned by John P. Schott and the south side by Putnam Catlin.
