Thursday, March 5, 2015. Birding and Photography Ethics. Great Horned Owl Nestlings. The park rangers were kind enough to put up an orange fence around this tree to keep people at a safe distance. If you follow the signs and barriers, you can be confident you're not causing harm. Black-Necked Stilt in Distraction Display. These kinds of displays are a good sign that you're close enough to a nest or young to cause stress. Best behavior is to give the bird more distance. Lark Sparrow with Bird Seed. So I t...

Friday, October 19, 2012. outdoor photography: Cliff Swallow
http://www.learnoutdoorphotography.com/2015/08/cliff-swallow.html
Wednesday, August 5, 2015. This past June I finally took some presentable photos of Cliff Swallows. There is a place in Orange County where they're known to breed, so one early morning I drove out there hoping one would be cooperative. I actually found at least three there around two nests. Of course, they were nesting under a bridge, which was quite a bit darker. My photos of them pearched around the nest area were not as good, since I don't use flash. But I figured I'd share one just for fun. Seminole ...

Central Florida Nature Outings: October 2013
http://cfno.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html
Central Florida Nature Outings. Wednesday, October 23, 2013. At 1100pm, this Jacksonville radar is an example of what the Melbourne radar also is showing- the yellows and orange/reddish are birds in the air. The wind speed is 5mph in Jax from the WNW so the colors are showing objects moving with a southerly component at 15-30 mph. That ain't dust and smoke, folks (that moves at the same speed as the wind)- that means powered flight. OBJECTS IN AIR. NATIONAL REFLECTIVITY at 1100pm 23 Oct 2013. At 300pm ...
