The Second Hand Dogs: November 2013

The Second Hand Dogs. Sometimes a dog will show up when a person needs one most. Sometimes a person will show up when a dog needs one most. Sometimes a dog and a person will find each other at just the right moment - a moment when they need each other more than either could ever imagine." - from Stay by Michaela Muntean. Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Why should flowering plants get all the attention? With the fresh new growth lighting up the conifers, now is the time of year to visit our Pinetum. This collection of dwarf evergreen conifers was a gift to the Rodebaughs in 1972 from horticulturist Phillip A. Livingston. He wanted his collection to be preserved, and it is certainly thriving at Welkinweir. Thursday, May 17, 2012. The Show Goes On. Left: 'Ben Morrison' azalea. Right: fragrant yellow azalea. A Welkinweir Perspective: July 2012

Friday, July 27, 2012. The Children's Garden is the place to be if you want to view one of nature's prettiest insects: tiger swallowtail butterflies. They love the Joe-pye weed. I found some fun facts about this insect on the Encyclopedia of Life website. http:/ eol.org/. Http:/ www.welkinweir.org/. Friday, July 20, 2012. They are just a mass of huge leaves, maybe colorful, bold textured, just sitting there. Until the light hits them. And the flowers appear. And the raindrops fall and coat it all. Also, ...

A Welkinweir Perspective: December 2012
http://welkinweir.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 13, 2012. A Beginning and an End. The Welkinweir estate house was beautifully decorated for the holiday open house this past weekend. I took pictures of some of the decorations for those who were unable to attend. Students from OJR decorated our entry with silver and blue. I think they did a fine job. I was able to help decorate the tree this year. It was a silver and gold theme with a bird influence. Enjoy this parting shot of a bashful hellebore. :). Wednesday, December 5, 2012.

A Welkinweir Perspective: L'eau de Welkinweir
http://welkinweir.blogspot.com/2013/05/leau-de-welkinweir.html
Wednesday, May 15, 2013. Each season has its unique charms that are worth celebrating - that special something that can make you forget the previous season and wish this one would stay just a little bit longer. For me, the certain "je ne sais quoi" about spring is the profusion of colors and fragrances that this season's flowers bring. Bumblebee visiting 'Dragon Lady' holly flowers. Appalachian Red' - a particularly colorful and floriferous cultivar of Eastern Redbud. Dwarf Crested Iris, white. Was our a...

A Welkinweir Perspective: Spring Is (Finally) Here!
http://welkinweir.blogspot.com/2013/04/spring-is-finally-here.html
Thursday, April 18, 2013. Spring Is (Finally) Here! The weather of the past couple of weeks reminded me of a quote from one of my favorite silly movies, Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Winter changed into Spring; Spring changed into Summer; Summer changed back into Winter; and Winter gave both Spring and Summer a miss and went straight into Autumn.". To be sure, there has been quite a temperature fluctuation! Can you spot the honeybee visiting the cherry blossoms? Blossoms were held to sym...

A Welkinweir Perspective: January 2013

Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Castor's New Year Resolution. This is Kelsey from Green Valleys Association. I’ll do my best to keep you posted on the latest and greatest here at Welkinweir, home of Green Valleys Association, in 2013. Since it is January, the month of beginnings and New Year’s resolutions, I thought it might be appropriate to share what I believe to be the resolution of our resident beaver family. But a bit of a backstory first:. In case there was any doubt as to whose work this is! Last ye...

A Welkinweir Perspective: March 2013
http://welkinweir.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 28, 2013. A Slow Start to Spring. While spring has begun officially, it seems that winter still hasn't released its chilly grip on us. Given the dreary weather of the past several days-especially our Monday snowstorm! I’m probably not the only one who’s pining for the return of sunshine and spring flowers, so I thought I’d cheer our blog’s readers up with a small reflection on the 2013 Philadelphia International Flower Show. The theme was “Brilliant! Cricket bats leaning against quaint br...
