A large bowl for the mixture to steep in. 3 empty wine bottles (always an easy one in this house). They can be sterilised by washing in the dishwasher or spending ten minutes in a low oven. A bowl and a sieve to go over it. Some muslin to line the sieve like this. If you don't have muslin just use your finest sieve but the liquid won't be quite as clear. 15 litres of water.

Sitting at right angles to the house is a stone building which used to be a stable and the forge for the farm. It was converted in 2004 to a holiday cottage called Gwenoldy. Which means house of swallows in Welsh. Have a look at the website for Tripadvisor reviews if you are interested. There are two bedrooms, one with a kingsized bed. Every now and then I realise I have been accomplishing things, almost accidentally, not in a ticking things off a list sort of way. I look around and, amongst all the undone things and the half done things, I find that something has actually been finished almost without my noticing. Beautiful, a mini Amsterdam with canals and bridges and bikes. It is a university town with something of the same feel as Cambridge, but with canals! The place we stayed in was a real find, an apartment. We rented bikes from our hosts and, having not ridden a bike for about twenty five years, I tested the cliche that you never forget and found it to be true.

This is a garden diary, for myself, to keep track of the flowers, fruit and vegetables which grow up here on the hill. Wednesday, 1 April 2009.
