The Beverly Hills Astronomer. Astronomy from Beverly Hills, MD 21214! Automating the LHiRes III Calibration Lamps. March 15, 2015. The recent upgrades to the LHiRes III spectrograph include an improved calibration lamp assembly that basically has three positions:. Straight through (normal data acquisition). Neon-Argon Wavelength Calibration Lamp. The next task is to create a small class library for the control so that I can incorporate the automation into scripts that can be run from Maxim DL, which is w...

The Beverly Hills Astronomer. Astronomy from Beverly Hills, MD 21214! Relative Throughput Tests Using Focal Reducers with a Santa Barbara Instrument Group Self-Guiding Spectrograph. This shows the approximate shape and size of the “D mirror” in the SGS. Light from the slit is collimated by the left side and sent towards the grating. Light returning from the grating is focused by the right side onto the camera chip. Shown in Figure 2 are scale drawings of the D mirror with the illumination pattern from a ...

The South Dome
http://www.beverlyhillsastronomer.org/south-dome
The Beverly Hills Astronomer. Astronomy from Beverly Hills, MD 21214! The South Dome is a Technical Innovators 10-foot HomeDome that was purchased from a local amateur astronomer in 2010. For those of you from Baltimore, the person I bought the dome from was Norm Lewis, chief meteorologist at Channel 2, WMAR-TV. When Norm decided to retire and return to his native Florida he elected not to take the observatory with him and so offered it up on AstroMart. A view inside Dome #2. December 5, 2015 at 08:43.

The Beverly Hills Astronomer. Astronomy from Beverly Hills, MD 21214! October 5, 2014. This is the first evening of real autumn! Rig #1 is running another sequence of spectra for the U Montreal campaign – Deneb and PCyg, both at H-alpha, then Deneb at the Si lines. Rig #2 is again shooting a sequence of images of GD552. This may be my last night on this object as Joe Patterson is requesting data from several other targets. Filed Under: Observatory Log. Leave a Comment Cancel reply. Return to top of page.

The Beverly Hills Astronomer. Astronomy from Beverly Hills, MD 21214! June 26, 2014. After many false starts this year I finally got back out to the observatories and did some real observing! By the middle of the last century photometric and spectroscopic observations had revealed that UX UMa was, in fact, an eclipsing nova-like system. For a really good description of this star and a quick synopsis of the nova-like class check out this. There is a lot going on in the light curve of UX UMa!
