From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Thursday, 26 June 2014. I've been to the 'Putting Birmingham Schoolkids First' meeting this evening, which was a dramatic and wonderful event. When we feared that the whole #trojanhorse event would shut down the voice of communities, we were - evidently - mistaken. What a fabulous thing. That kind of thinking makes for a divided city, and therefore a divided human family. As I said this evening, we need one city, not a disparate set of introverted ...

From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Wednesday, 17 December 2014. The Suffragan See of Stockport. The bishop-designate has my prayers, not just because she is first, but because she begins at a time where episcopacy seems to have invented another rod for its own back. From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Thursday, 12 February 2015. I think every cleric worth their salt (and who has been doing their job properly) has come across a variety of bereaved families, with a variety of needs. My training incumbent's advice was always to find ways of saying 'yes'. Good advice. Every request should be heard and received graciously as a funeral is planned as collaboratively as possible. Being clear about expectations and obligations from the outset is key. Seems c...

From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Thursday, 22 January 2015. The Suffragan See of Burnley. What would be better? That all the CofE bishops who happen to be male take part in this consecration, and Bishop Libby be forced to sit at the back? Or is it better that a consecration, with no violation of the integrity of the rite, be celebrated where some of those who have a right to consecrate, or co-consecrate, do not exercise it? This is my complete speech to Birmingham Diocesan Synod for the debate on the Article 8 reference on Women in the Episcopate. Represent my last-minute amendments, which I give as my best recollections of what I actually said. This blog h...

From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Monday, 17 February 2014. They are terrible and dreadful. Much had been hoped for from Sir Joseph Pilling, and his report offered some progress on Anglican views on human sexuality. The bishops, in a slight of hand between the end of General Synod and the coming of the Sabbath-day, have shown far less imagination. The state may have created the two tiers of religious and civil marriage, but we are going to have to do better than that. Links to this post.

From the Rector's Desk. At the heart of Northampton. Tuesday, 15 April 2014. Of #trojanhorse, and rumours of Trojan Horses. I've been pondering a blogpost on this topic for some weeks, but - inevitably - others have said what I would have done and have chosen to keep quiet. So, Mr Gove, if you're gunning for Local Government, please leave schools alone - they are not your target, and you'll only end up hurting children and hard-working teachers the most.
