In an Octopus's Garden

In an Octopus's Garden. Sunday, August 9, 2009. The Falmouth Road Race. Many calories were burned in Woods Hole/Falmouth this morning. Around 10,000 people (so the rumors say) ran today in the 37th annual Falmouth Road Race. Since the race path runs right near our Oyster Pond Home, a number of Summer Student Fellows and Joint Program Students traveled down to Surf Drive to watch the runners. The man in first place (below), who I’m sure ended up winning, had a good 30-second lead on the second pack. 8221;...

In an Octopus's Garden: Who is the scientist?

http://whoi-ssf09.blogspot.com/2009/08/who-is-scientist.html

In an Octopus's Garden. Saturday, August 1, 2009. Who is the scientist? I am currently sitting at a picnic table, basking in the sun behind the Redfield lab building. It is a gorgeous day! Today’s entry is about a lecture I attended yesterday afternoon as part of the 2009 Woods Hole Diversity Celebration. Pictured below), the Franklin L. Ford Professor of the History of Science at Harvard University, delivered a talk entitled “Who is the scientist? He spoke about the naturalist fallacy. Slipping casually...

In an Octopus's Garden: A Diversion

http://whoi-ssf09.blogspot.com/2009/07/diversion.html

In an Octopus's Garden. Wednesday, July 29, 2009. Sometimes lab work requires a lot of waiting. Usually it’s a good idea to use that down time to read papers, or go through data (when you have data to go through). Sometimes I like to clean up the lab or do some minor lab tasks like sterilizing pipette tips or replenishing supplies. And when it’s not raining, I commute to work on my bike. Tonight, it’s back into the village for a bit of work at the library. July 30, 2009 at 9:26 AM. Additional diversion i...

In an Octopus's Garden: June 2009

http://whoi-ssf09.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

In an Octopus's Garden. Monday, June 29, 2009. In April, my friend mailed me a dried four-leaf clover. I damaged the fragile specimen while opening his letter and thought I was in for a streak of bad luck. The luck charm must have still worked, however, because not long thereafter I got an e-mail from Dr. Shank asking me to accompany him on a research cruise to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench (the deepest point in the ocean)! Where is the trench, anyway? From www.whoi.edu. Which is a Hybrid Rem...

In an Octopus's Garden: Did you know that… (Part One)

http://whoi-ssf09.blogspot.com/2009/07/did-you-know-that-part-one.html

In an Octopus's Garden. Tuesday, July 21, 2009. Did you know that… (Part One). 8230;there are large gaps between what scientists think and what the public believes? My mother recently e-mailed me a NY Times article that highlighted differences in views held by most of the science community and views held by most Americans. You can read the article online at http:/ www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/science/10survey.html. While answers are rarely straightforward or obvious, we should all ponder such questions.

Who Hurts Romanian Dogs

Who Hurts Romanian Dogs. Just another WordPress weblog. La Piovra (The Octopus). August 8th, 2015. 8220;La Piovra” or The Octopus is a stylish name when referring to Mafia. But, hey – they found THEIR REAL purpose in life – rescuing Romanian animals only. The “Foreign-Queens-Animal-Rescuers-in-Romania” need to build their ” play ground” now. They search for the most obedient, ass-kissers native Romanian animal rescues (and the offer is generous! Now the queen must find a way to money-laundry! Nancy Janes...
