Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: March 2015
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Saturday, 28 March 2015. Tuesday, 24 March 2015. Well, its been a great few days on the island for birds and photography. This has largely been helped by the settled conditions and great lighting, making it pleasant to be out when no help is needed with the lambing that is currently underway. The weather has taken a chilly, breezy and somewhat damper turn today, but we can't complain after the last few weeks of great conditions. The first Blackcap. Have all been on the move. Monday, 23 March 2015. The ba...

Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: December 2013
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, 12 December 2013. Kenya October/November 2013- volunteering at Mwamba Field Study Centre. And check out more of their work here. You could also 'Like' their Facebook page here. The entrance to A Rocha Kenya. A wealth of ecologically-diverse and important habitats in the surrounding area places Mwamba at an ideal location from which to see a fantastic variety of birdlife. I will attempt to outline the main birding areas in the following paragraphs, but here is an overview of the area:. Initially...

Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: The season for insects...
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-season-for-insects.html
Monday, 10 August 2015. The season for insects. As flowers such as Hardheads, Thistles, Borage and Bramble come into bloom, a great variety of different insects can be found here too. Butterflies, wasps, bees, hoverflies and much more visit these nectar-rich flowers, providing a great place to observe these cool creatures. Again, I have included a couple of shots of my favourites below, but many more have been giving me a good challenge for IDing. Six-spot Burnets are having a bit of a poor year on the i...

Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: April 2015
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, 26 April 2015. Although the species is handsome enough as it is, they undergo a pretty phenomenal migration, being said to be the largest of any passerine. For now I shall outline the migration of the Greenland-race Wheatear, as it is far more impressive than our British birds. Oenanthe oenanthe leucorhoa. As the Greenland Wheatear is Scientifically named, breeds in the Arctic tundra. In Africa, depending on where they breed in the tundra:. Arriving in Western and Central Africa in about November...

Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: Bardsey's underwater world
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015/08/bardseys-underwater-world.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. I have had some great Grey Seal encounters this year- the above image shows one of the tamer ones swimming right up to me and even playing with my fins. Swimming through a Kelp 'tunnel'. The view over towards Bardsey mountain. What I think to be a Violet Stinger jellyfish. A bit of landscape shot from the East Side. Monday, 31 August 2015. Full Moon tides and Turnstones. Some of the totals for this week's wader counts have been quite impressive: yesterday we saw 72 Turnstones. Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: New Moon moth trapping
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015/08/new-moon-moth-trapping.html
Sunday, 16 August 2015. New Moon moth trapping. Yesterday was one of the busiest days for trapping, with just under 400 moths in the withies trap and about 250 in the Nant trap. Some of the highlights in the last few days have included the first Square-spot Darts. Of the year (Nationally scarce), Ruby Tiger. In terms of micro moths, there have been some relatively exciting finds, including the following: Orthotelia sparganella. 2nd Bardsey record), Argyresthia bonnetella. Some notes from the 14th. Apolog...

Ben Porter Wildlife Photography: January 2015
http://benporterphotography.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Ecuador- an update on travels. I recently spent three days travelling to some local birding sites around the foothills of the Andes with a great guide called Nelson. We used a mixture of public transport and hitch-hiking to get to three main birding sites, mainly that of Milpe, Rio Silanche and Mashpi. These three areas are of differing habitats and elevations, which allowed us to see over 200 species during the three days. Near-endemic species like Choco Toucan. And lots of Whi...

Shinedown’s Carnival of Madness. September 10, 2013 in. Shinedown’s 2013 Carnival of Madness tour truly has me at a loss for words. If I just throw around superlatives, they lose meaning… right? I’ll use them anyways. They deserve it. Brilliant. Stunning. Amazing. Unsurpassed. Surprising. Consummate. I’ve known this for a while, and Shinedown’s sold-out Carnival of Madness performance in Cincinnati, OH on August 17th, 2013 only reminded me of these things. Shinedown DESTROYS Atlanta on the Uproar Fest!
