An American abroad (by William Zale)
Monday night | Taiwan
https://williamzale.wordpress.com/2012/11/26/hello-world
Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). November 26, 2012. And then there’s my reluctance to blog at all. I have no desire to be a confessional blogger, but I don’t really want to send out mass emails, either. A friend of mine advised me to start a very poorly publicized blog, and now here I am. So please don’t feel the need to advertise for me, unknown reader. I’m quite comfortable with my obscurity. Or leave a trackback: Trackback URL. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. March | 2014 | Taiwan
https://williamzale.wordpress.com/2014/03
Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). Archives for the month of: March, 2014. March 16, 2014. What about the pilots? It feels good to be on vacation, though (how could it not? I powered through this last week at Gloria, and very little could ruin my good mood about an upcoming lack of work AND a visit home. I even made sure to time my vacation so that I missed four Saturdays of work even though I’m only really taking three weeks off. Having a five-day workweek was such a pleasant novelty. March 1, 2014.
January | 2014 | Taiwan
https://williamzale.wordpress.com/2014/01
Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). Archives for the month of: January, 2014. January 21, 2014. I just told my Chinese tutor that I wasn’t interested in pursuing future lessons with her, which felt oddly like breaking up with someone. The whole it’s not you, it’s me sentiment and all that. It was a strange moment. Have to speak Chinese to get by in Taiwan. Doing so would certainly lead to a richer experience here, but it isn’t absolutely necessary. Or French. I Skyped with my parents on Sunday, and m...
The Waterfall Oasis | Taiwan
https://williamzale.wordpress.com/2013/12/26/the-waterfall-oasis
Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). December 26, 2013. That Willy guy, you’re thinking, he knows how to live. Always going on cool little trips and doing things like finding remote waterfalls. Well, yes, I do know how to live. You’re right about that. But the title of this blog post actually refers to my current living situation. And no, I’m not camping next to a waterfall, although if it were next to a hot spring, I wouldn’t say no. The flat roof (I’ll never understand the rationale behind them when the...

Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). November 17, 2013. A few hours later, I ended up here. Nice and deep into the mountains. 8220;Shan” is the Chinese for mountain, so this is literally “La La Mountain.” The “La” apparently doesn’t mean anything. I learned on this trip that my new bike, while faster and more reliable than my old motorcycle, is also far. Taiwan has some good national parks, and this was one of them. I enjoyed the view:. Almond fish with a view. What could be better? A little dark, but thi...

Lessons from Panic Swamp: August 2013

Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Monday, August 12, 2013. I chew, therefore I am.". Besides, if I'm not thinking then who is having these thoughts? Has the government put a chip in my gray matter? From radical skepticism to paranoia is a very small step. After living out our partial lives, are we just absorbed into the great, throbbing, eternal being of Substance? From existential anxiety to fear of postmodern erasure is a very small step. The dance goes on. Huck and Jim A...

Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Sunday, September 8, 2013. The Chicken and The End. Freedom Rangers last ride. These birds aren't animals anymore," scoffed our daughter. "They became food two weeks ago.". Fruits of the Freedom Ranger. One could argue that it's better to raise a bird without any pluck. Not only do you get more meat for your grain money, you also suffer less pain when you snuff them out. Who cares if a pluckless creature is rendered inert? Standing on the m...
Lessons from Panic Swamp: This side of the overpass

Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Tuesday, October 12, 2010. This side of the overpass. 8221; asked another member of the committee, vainly attempting to steer the conversation in a different direction. Suffice it to say, I didn’t get the job. 8221; With the former, there’s some hope that we might form different social habits. In the latter, we’re constrained to talk about a past event. Why treat them as if they are in need of reform? October 13, 2010 at 8:10 AM. I think th...
Lessons from Panic Swamp: Accentuate the Negative
http://www.panicswamp.net/2010/01/accentuate-negative.html
Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Luckily, once I’ve deeply appreciated the complexity of the mid-winter sky, I can eventually turn a more forgiving eye back to life within these four walls. Isn’t it great that I even have a breakfast? Aren’t I lucky to have a dog-loving girlfriend? Isn’t it fortunate that I have a job that makes me read? So what would this look like? So how does conservation change my original thought-experiment? Phan mem ban han...
Lessons from Panic Swamp: Memento Mori

Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Monday, June 24, 2013. But the next morning we woke up to find one dead bird and immediately lost our bearings on the whole operation. If one was dead, surely others would follow. During the day we noticed other possible victims. One of them appeared to be scratched, its skin exposed just above the wing. Did it need to be separated from the others before they pecked it to death? But not every chick makes it to the pot. Bạn đang phân vân khô...
Lessons from Panic Swamp: What's in The Future?
http://www.panicswamp.net/2013/04/whats-in-future.html
Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Monday, April 29, 2013. What's in The Future? But it's not just our capable friends and fertile coop dwellers that reduces our anxiety about What We Do Not Have. When the goats made a jailbreak from their winter confines and made a run for the fresh flesh of daylilies, we couldn't help but laugh as they lay waste to the flowers. "Whee, whee! Scampered the five little ones. "Look at this great green abundance.". March 19, 2015 at 2:41 AM.

Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Friday, November 29, 2013. But have you won? So who is right, the rooster or the rooster-baiter? Second, she is a rational autonomous being, capable of reading political philosophy and acting according to her free will. He is a mere chicken of limited brain (albeit with a set of impressive spurs). The only reason she plays with the rooster is because she decided it was a fun thing to do. II, Prop. 13, Scholia. http://www.panicswamp.net/2013_06_01_archive.html
Lessons from Panic Swamp. Live Like Peasants and Eat Like Kings. Monday, June 24, 2013. Meat birds begin their life in transit, inside the arteries of the United States Postal Service, crossing state lines with bestsellers from Amazon and stretch jeans from Lands End. But unlike those other packages, chick boxes contain a surplus, a couple of extra baby birds to make up for the wear and tear of travel. Its an inexpensive way to console the customer when a pile of feathers arrives without any peeps. 160;&...

Taiwan | An American abroad
Start at the beginning (Nov. 2012). May 4, 2014. I’ll be getting on a plane on July 29. That will fly non-stop from Taiwan to JFK, which is officially less than three months away at this point. But who’s counting. I don’t want to give the impression that I’m some kind of hermit, however. I certainly do still go out, it’s just that I’m often as happy to stay at home as I am to make a foray out into the world on my precious day off. Our table, in the back. The view looking forward from the table we were at.
