A deployable CNC router. The foldafab is a CNC router that has a reasonably large 15"x15"x2" work envelope but can be folded up and carried like a suitcase. 8592; Will Makes Things. Mimbo, A Friendly Robot. Mimbo is a friendly robot who mimics your emotions. I made Mimbo in December 2011. He has a cardboard body and an iPhone for a face. He uses face tracking through your computer's webcam to track your facial features and expressions and then does his best to mimic them. Everything is done through the OSC protocol with Processing and TouchOSC. I documented how I made him on Instructables. He also got picked up by a few blogs like Engadget.

Larr; Will Makes Things. Handheld CNC, 2012. I am working on making a computer-controlled handheld carving or milling tool. I started this project in Fall 2012 as my final project for my class, How to Make (Almost) Anything. Taught by my advisor, Neil Gershenfeld). This work is inspired in part by previous work in this area (e.g., Amit Zoran's FreeD. And Alec Rivers' Handheld CNC Router). And in part by my group's (the Center for Bits and Atoms) recent collaboration with Jeff Koons.

In the past few weeks I've been thinking about how to make a desktop wire-EDM. Now it's made. At the center of the machine is the wire feed mechanism I made in a prior week. It's responsible for controlling the wire speed and tension. The wire passes through a few pulleys before presenting the cutting length of wire to the workpiece. The wire is then sent back over the feed mechansim and onto a take-up spool.

The Foldafab is a portable, computer-controlled router, capable of packing down to fit in a duffel, and expanding to fit a wide variety of stocks and objects. It can machine foams, woods, and plastics, as well as in situ. Objects like tables, signs, walls, vehicles, robots, etc. The Foldafab uses a Sarrus linkage as a collapsable linear guide actuated by a flexible belt tensioning system. The design is modular, as multiple units can be snapped together to form a larger range of travel.

A single grain of sand engraved with the words "JUST SAND", 1mm at its widest. Inspired by the mischievous constructor robots, Trurl and Klapaucius, in Stanislaw Lem's science fiction story, "The Second Sally", I collaborated with Will Langford. To engrave the words "JUST SAND" on a single grain of sand using an Excimer micromachining laser. The computer program we wrote telling the laser how to write "JUST SAND". Aiming the laser on the grain of sand. CT scanning the engraved grain of sand.
