About Wish On A STAR. Grace named her non-profit company Wish on a STAR because she is the only US Citizen diagnosed with STAR Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. There are only 5 people diagnosed with STAR Syndrome in the world. When Grace found her friend, Lena, in Germany (who also has STAR Syndrome) it helped her feel less “alone” in her battle. Wish on a STAR is hosting a benefit for Tom Smith, also of Van Horne. Two days after starting college at Iowa State University, Tom collapsed with difficulty breathing. Test results confirmed Tom has lymphoma. Tom’s prognosis includes 36 months of chemo, radiation, and repeated spinal taps. Tom and his mother, Janet, have a long road ahead of them and a lot of expenses. Tom graduated from Benton Community this past May with honors, and he was planning to study software engineering.
