Ants on a log, Pumpernickel and spotted dicks the weird and wonderful names for dishes. Not only dishes have weird names. Being a translator, it is not unusual to stumble upon weird terms for everyday objects or tools. The Germans love to give their tools animal names, e.g. Kuhfuß (crowbar/jemmy) = cow foot, Fuchsschwanz (rip saw) = fox tail or names that include unfortunate innuendo like Nippelspanner (spoke wrench). Yes, we have the occasional funny name for a dish:. Ant on a log. Toad in the hole.

Wordfest 2005
Wednesday, July 06, 2005. Our children must read these books. Dr Laban Erapu, publisher with the Vaal University Press, despairingly began his second re-launch of his five books yesterday, to a disappointing audience of one. The room was also empty on Tuesday at 3pm when Dr Erapu first tried to bring the five books into the public eye. Laban said that the books have since been "polished as better works of art" with "many language problems" having been ironed out. Before this reworking, Laban said that th...
