the word hoard

Close to the bone. What is actually happening in Britain? Here’s my entirely intuitive guess: 25% of the population are living on or below the poverty line; 25% are ‘wealthy’ and within this group are perhaps 5% who are. Apparently this frightened 50% are those assigned the task of electing majority governments in Britain, and they are given a range of names and credited with various characteristics by all sorts of experts. Seems a common element, occasionally. The centre ground of British politics.

Close to the bone. Rope Walks Square, Liverpool. At night you sleep soundly,. Rain an anointment –. Curled at the centre of old apple trees. You came here through daylight,. Brambles and nettles,. To bring home your offering,. Your handiwork, your heart. Cloth made of ships’ nets,. Yarn made of feathers,. Dye made of daylight bound into dirt. A city with a river,. A port and a village. Embroidered in fine silks,. Grey gulls and rust,. Outlines of warehouses tied in with knots. It has sewn you right in.

Close to the bone. A family of small ankles. Grown fatter by the days trapped. Aphids and mondays big beetle kill. She determined to bind. From washing line to window. The wind began her descent. To repair her laddered web. Sits up close statuesque. Vanishing into sofa shadow. Along the washing line. To take up residence. On the summer house window. Like a kids drawing. A week later she returned. A corner of the kitchen window. A small yellow plane circling overhead. The mistress came out of hiding.

Close to the bone. The Lost Frida Kahlo. What thin veil holds them back? Fotini had once said that she could never commit suicide because she always wanted to find out what happened next. In her version of the world, wonderful surprises are more likely than terrible ones. Now I am going to tell you a story about someone who was not strictly a member of my family. My parents accumulated layers of friends in California; far from their own relatives, they adopted aunts and uncles and cousins and children.
