Dancing with the Word

Sunday, August 9, 2015. Some (Not So) Random Thoughts on Bread. Every time I travel to Minneapolis, I do all I can to make time to drop in at my favorite used bookstore. Last week, like every other time, I managed to walk out of there with a number of books I just couldn't do without. This time my haul included a little book purchased for $3.50 titled Sourdough Breads and Coffee Cakes: 104 Recipes Using Homemade Starters. Where have you seen this to be so? Last Friday's Sourdough Bread. What do you think?

Dancing with the Word: November 2014

http://words.dancingwiththeword.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2014. Where Righteousness is at Home. But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home." 2nd Peter 3:13. I simply love the imagery offered to us in this week's lesson from Second Peter. In these words we are encouraged in this long wait that is ours. More than that, though, we find here a clear reminder that the object of our waiting is meant to show in our living: in. Righteousness is surely not yet at home. We talked, too,...

Dancing with the Word: September 2014

http://words.dancingwiththeword.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, September 28, 2014. On Monday morning we left the house early. I was headed off to a conference and my mother decided to tag along to visit her sister for a couple of days. (If you don't know this yet, my mother moved in with me on Labor Day. No doubt, that is the subject of another 'story,' but for now let me say that all is going well.). Now if you have a cat, you know how they can seem to 'own the place.' Shadow, in particular, is not. How do you hear Jesus' parable today? It is a hard word th...

Dancing with the Word: July 2014

http://words.dancingwiththeword.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 27, 2014. On Loaves and Fishes and Parking Spaces. It's such a familiar story before us now that it's hard to hear anything new in it. Indeed, it rolls around with slight variations again and again. Even so, while for the most part these are not 'original' thoughts on this story, these are what come to mind today. And there is this, too. How does one end up with more than what one started out with? Twelve baskets full, in fact. How does. Now let me paint the picture for you. Our church b...

Dancing with the Word: April 2014

http://words.dancingwiththeword.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 27, 2014. I get that. Indeed, as I was thinking through this story again in these last days I was taken back to a journey I took a long time ago. One that held some things in common with the walk these disciples found themselves on. Like Cleopas and the other disciple, have you ever walked a road to Emmaus? What do you recall about the journey? Did you meet Jesus on the way? How was this so? As you look back, can you recognize now how your heart was 'burning within you? Links to this post.

Dancing with the Word: God is Not Done

http://words.dancingwiththeword.com/2015/08/god-is-not-done.html

Sunday, August 2, 2015. God is Not Done. John 6:35, 41-51. Poor Elijah is surely in a bad place today. We know this to be so because he says so. We also know this is so because of things he has done just prior to our encounter with him at this point in the narrative. He is heard to have dismissed his servant - - a sure sign that he is done with the ministry to which he had been called. It's hard to figure, yes, and at least to our way of thinking, the story doesn't give us nearly enough to go on. Ind...

Random thoughts from a Methodist minister in inner city London. Newer posts →. August 22, 2014. There are still Routemasters running in London, though they are confined to a couple of short ‘heritage’ routes catering mainly for tourists. Outside central London you are more likely to see them running as ‘specials’ for weddings and other occasions, though during the tube strikes earlier this year there were a number of veteran buses running extra journeys during the rush hour periods. Jesus spoke words of life. Negative Words - so destructive. We've all heard wise sayings about words. Survivors of trauma recall the destructive power of negative words. Especially when we were vulnerable or captive to the one speaking the words. For some of us it was the negative words of a parent or teacher or Priest or coach or peer. or boss at work or someone else. The power of these words needs to be broken. The poison of such words need to be neutralised. Positive words have positive power.
