Where stories are shaped. Gin Phillips’ first novel, The Well and the Mine, tells the story of one family in a 1931 Alabama coal-mining town. In 2009, the book won the Barnes and Noble Discover Award. The Well and the Mine has been released in nearly a dozen countries worldwide. Gin has also written Come In and Cover Me, the story of the relationships involved on an archaeological dig in rural New Mexico, and The Hidden Summer, a middle-grade novel set on an abandoned golf course in Birmingham.

Where stories are shaped. Each Wordsmiths class is divided into vocabulary exercises, lecture, group exercises and games, and short writing projects. Every month, we focus on a different type of writing. Below is a sample syllabus and a selection of class assignments. September 29: First Day of Class. Where stories are shaped. These students work hard. Some hope to be writers when they grow up, while others hope to be doctors or professors or scientists. What they all have in common is that they love learning. Concentrated help with standardized test preparation, college essays, scholarship applications, and general college preparation. A $2,000 scholarship at the end of their senior year in high school towards the college of their choice. Wordsmiths is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
