The best books about the movies. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game (2003). Because they changed so much in a subtle way, while still keeping the essential truth of the piece, and the results are incredibly impressive. The best books about the movies. Friday, March 28, 2014. The Genius of the System (1988). This is a fascinating history of Hollywood. One of the most remarkable elements of The Genius of the System:. Hollywood Filmmaking in the Studio Era. Adds a new dimension to that history that can’t help but put it in a new light. Schatz has an casual and engaging that is never the less convincing for the massive research he put into it. It’s a great history and is highly recommended. View my complete profile.

Words on Film: Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1996)

http://www.wordsonfilmblog.blogspot.com/2013/01/past-imperfect-history-according-to.html

The best books about the movies. Saturday, January 19, 2013. Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1996). This is a book I wanted to enjoy a lot more than I did. There was a tremendous book by the same editor, Mark C. Carnes, that came out in 2001 and was much more satisfying called Novel History. Another problem with the book, especially in comparison with Novel History. From there, however, the quality slips. He begins with a paragraph that deals with a great perspective on viewing historica...

Film Score Fanatic: January 2013

http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 12, 2013. Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (1982). Though there have been some great scores from composers late in their careers, one thinks of Dimitri Tiomkin’s Guns of Navarone. Or Bernard Herrmann’s Taxi Driver. Perhaps no composer had such a fruitful later career as Miklós Rózsa, who scored films like The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes. And Eye of the Needle. At the end of his career. But the score of his that is perhaps most impressive is his last, Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Is an incred...

Saturday, October 11, 2008. The Jazz Project - Fangs. S last album came out on Verve in 1999. Reissues? Well, now that the Blue Note and OJC catalogues have been pretty well exhausted, what remains might be interesting (Chess, Duke/Peacock, etc.) but I don't think there are any hidden Sidewinder. S or Soul Station. S left out there. (Unless you count Sonny Criss. S At The Crossroads. Which has been released in Japan.). And Stacie McGregor's Straight Up. As a fan for years of Grant Green. Is, pure and sim...

The Hard Bop Homepage Blog: Isaac Hayes

http://hardbophomepage.blogspot.com/2008/08/isaac-hayes.html

Wednesday, August 13, 2008. Is still one of my favorite albums . . . ever . . . in any genre. There have been numerous versions of Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft" but I wanted to share with you one of my favorites. It's from the 1974 album by Maynard Ferguson MF Horn 2. In terms of fusion/big band sessions from the 70s, this has to be near the top of the list in terms of both song selection and solos. The opener, "Give It One," is probably the best Ferguson track from the entire decade. Have a Nice Decade.

Film Score Fanatic: December 2014

http://filmscorefanatic.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Wednesday, December 31, 2014. My first exposure to this classic Max Steiner score came via Charles Gerhardt’s incomparable RCA recordings, in this case the album called Captain Blood – Classic Film Scores for Errol Flynn. In addition to his swashbucklers penned by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, there were also suites from a couple of his Warner Brothers’ westerns written by the great Max Steiner, They Died With Their Boots On. And my favorite, Dodge City. Or Steiner’s The Fountainhead. View my complete profile.

The Delights of the Genre. Observations and Analysis of Genre Fiction. Sunday, January 11, 2015. The Man Who Knew How (1932). By Dorothy L. Sayers. This isn’t usually the kind of mystery story that I like to read, but I recently acquired The Complete Stories of Dorothy Sayers. And thought I would delve into it. I decided to begin with some of her stand-alone stories rather than those featuring Lord Peter Wimsey or Montague Egg. “ The Man Who Knew How. 8221; was first published in Harper’s Bazaar. 8221; i...
