Exploring the changing world of work. Sunday, 30 March 2014. Has Microsoft Word had it's day? This week Microsoft has at long last released a version of Word for iPads and Android tablets. This has left me wondering whether Word is the right tool for a world where most information is now read on digital devices, and we are all looking for better ways of collaborating with each other. Paper product for a digital era. The original word processor. More to the point, Microsoft has been slow to notice that th...

Exploring the changing world of work. Wednesday, 2 July 2014. Does everyone at work really look like this? In my last post I mentioned that I had been helping to set up a new business website for Work Out Loud. Occasionally, for balance, there was a silver haired George Clooney look alike often surrounded by admiring women, but older women in management roles were few and far between. The images were certainly attractive, but they didn't feel like the modern workplace. Where were the people over 30, ...

Exploring the changing world of work. Thursday, 27 February 2014. A revolution in the way we work. I decided to start this blog because I wanted to explore the revolution we are going through in the way we work. The traditional office, with its 9-5 routine, is fast becoming a thing of the past. More and more of us are now in jobs that do not have a fixed office base – we may be working from home, customer sites, or even our local coffee shop. Future posts will discuss everything from how you enable a vir...

Exploring the changing world of work. Sunday, 16 March 2014. How to make a success of remote working. Many of us now work in what I call virtual teams. Teams members are often based in different locations, and made up of a combination of office-based, home based and mobile workers. Plan in plenty of face to face time. Encourage good team communications. You need to keep in regular contact with everyone on the team, and encourage team members to keep in touch with each other. Most of us are good of fi...

Why work doesn't happen at work | danny golding

Exploring the changing world of work. Monday, 3 March 2014. Why work doesn't happen at work. While we are on the subject of office working, I thought I would share this TED talk by Jason Fried. Who argues that the office is the last place you want to go if you want to get things done. Jason gave his talk way back in 2010, but it still rings true today. Jason is manager and co-founder of Basecamp. Some things don't hold up so well. This post inspired one of my readers to share this Dilbert cartoon.

Exploring the changing world of work. Thursday, 10 April 2014. Leaning the wrong way? Last weekend Sheryl Sandberg railed against the way in which successful women are still asked how they balance work and childcare, while “men aren’t asked how do you do this? Do you have nannies? Do you have a cook? Sanberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, was being interviewed. By the Guardian as part of the launch of a new ‘graduate’ edition of her book Lean In. Of course as Sandberg readily acknowledges, she and ...
