He enlisted on 2 November, 1942 with the rank of Private. Afterwards he was moved to Fort Campbell, Kentucky and then finally to Camp Wheeler, Georgia for basic training. The records for eighty percent of Army personnel from November, 1912 until January, 1960 were destroyed, including most discharges. Bill’s discharge record was in fact one of those lost.
