Ldquo;Merlin” was designed by naval architect Alex Simonis in August of 1993. The yacht design was commissioned and the yacht constructed under the ownership of Bill Jones, a senior Airbus pilot from SAA who sailed 4 races in her in 1996, including the Cape to Rio race (achieving 4th place overall). Nicholas Brown who was then a student at Stellenbosch University, spotted Merlin at RCYC and contacted Bill Jones. Bill sold Merlin to Hugh Brown (70%) and William Tuppeny III (30%) in 1997. A Victorian yacht built to race in 1860. MERMAID, a wooden gaff cutter yacht built and designed, in 1860, by ALFRED PAYNE, FOR RACING IN THE SOLENT. 150 years later she could be back racing again with a sail configuration similar to those used in 1860, wooden mast, but with modern sail cloth and Harken winches. It will be exciting to see how she goes. Unfortunately we couldn't be there for the sea trials but here are two of the photos taken in September 2012 of Mermaid sailing. And a current description.
