In 1660, the reigning monarch, King Charles 2nd built Palace House for his accommodation while he pursued his riding interests. Apparently, the King used to ride on a stretch of land that has now become the July course, but he had problems with the sun in his eyes and decided to use a second stretch of land that is now known as the Rowley Mile.
