1900 Farmhouse

Remodeling a quaint little farmhouse in Oregon, and getting loads of splinters along the way. Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The main reason for contracting out to Jane Coombs for a landscape design was that I knew little to nothing about what plants would survive under the thick canopy of the Douglas Fir trees that I planted in 1996. After failing at few plantings in the past, or at least not satisfied with how it looked after a year or two, I thought the investment would be worth it. Links to this post. For a...

Greengate Ranch Remodel: June 2009

http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Saturday, June 27, 2009. Backyard #10 - Adirondack Chairs and Creek. This post isn't on anything specific - I just took a break from yard work to take some pictures. I built a couple of adirondack chairs a few years ago, and I moved them down by the fire pit earlier this week. They have weathered to a silver gray and are actually fairly comfortable. We have been spending a lot evenings out here since the weather warmed up. This is conceptually what it will look like.

Greengate Ranch Remodel: April 2010

http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Monday, April 26, 2010. New Living Room Windows. Catching up on the blog: We put new windows into the living room about 3 weekends ago. This involved pulling out out the old 8' wide windows, removing the short wall between the two windows, adding in posts, and filling in the left-side corner. Unfortunately the old windows had broken seals and frames, and were only fit to go to the landfill. The first picture is "before" and the second is "after". The entry to our ho...

Greengate Ranch Remodel: October 2009

http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Sunday, October 18, 2009. The large tree in our backyard is turning yellow. It's one of my favorite sites in fall. I "staged" this picture a little bit with the Adirondack chairs and the fire pit. These doors needed to be cut to size, drilled for the knobs and routed for the hinges. I basically took each old door and used it as a pattern for the new one. The picture shows the stop-blocks clamped in place for routing the hinge pockets. Sunday, October 18, 2009. Style...

Greengate Ranch Remodel: April 2009

http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Wednesday, April 15, 2009. I feel like I have let my blog down. I am almost finished with a window seat project, and I have not taken one picture or written a word. Here is an in-progress picture - I just started taping the sheetrock. I got the inspiration to add one from reading the "Not So Big House" series and also looking at the house designs posted on Ross Chapin Architects. Bumping the wall out to build this required the following steps (materials costs).

Greengate Ranch Remodel: September 2009

http://greengateranchremodel.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Sunday, September 27, 2009. Making a $10 Bench. I came up with a simple bench design that you can make from a 1x12 pine board that's 8' long - which costs $10 right now (in Oregon). You could also make this from a 2x12. Here is a picture of one that I distressed and stained. It needs another coat of stain and then a couple applications of sealer. Here is the simple "cut diagram":. The top is on the left at 32". The legs in the center at 16". And I have nothing but p...

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Friday, May 21, 2010. Hall Tree #3 - Complete. The final thing I needed to do on the hall tree was put on the hardware - hangers and shelf brackets:. The oak-leaf hangers are what inspired us to do the hall tree in the first place. They are cast iron and painted flat black. We bought them at a local building materials reuse place. Which I am happy to promote. They have wide variety of stuff, prices are great, and they are very friendly. Friday, May 21, 2010. Once th...

Remodeling a Daylight Ranch in Oregon. Saturday, May 30, 2009. Backyard #5 - Patio Cover Roof and Stone. I had the day off yesterday - the weather was great. I was able to get the roof deck on the patio and some stone laid around the post bases. Here is a picture of the roof deck:. It obviously takes longer to lay a solid wood as opposed to plywood roof deck - but this picture shows why it's worth it. A 10' 2x6 costs $2.50 right now, while T&G costs $11. The difference here was $100 vs. $440. What about ...

1900s Fashion

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months." –Oscar Wilde. Thursday, August 20, 2015. What kinds of dresses do you associate with the 50s? I'll bet you think of some cute polka dotted dress with layer upon layer of tulle petticoats to keep the skirt swirly and full, with a halter top that ties in a huge bow at the back. That is our skewed (romanticized) version of what women wore in the 50s. Grace Kelly in Rear Window. Are there any I Love Lucy. It appears that...
