Paul Slaney | Fly Tying Crazy

July 9, 2015. July 9, 2015. It’s not often that a fly pattern makes such a huge impression on me – but this unlikely looking bug (at least to European eyes) has done just that. And I apologise to my Canadian and North American friends who will be yawning just about now. Bright Fluro Green body with a black wing seems to be the common theme though there are versions with white over wings etc. Hackles I’ve seen vary from grizzle to badger in all sorts of qualities. The version I’m going to describe i...

Wednesday, 18 March 2009. Los Roques 2009 - Photo Essay 2. Now on to day 4 I think the whole group was amazed at how fresh we felt despite a lot of traveling, a reasonable amount of walking and of course some hard fishing. However . Who operates the Sightcast. Who looked after us use these brilliant Pangas. These are amazing and especially the new angler series incorporating UV protection which you can see here. Here's a Buff in use covering my rather large ears! Have no chance of getting up my nose!

Aardvark McLeod: Miramichi River, Little Southwest River
http://aardvarkmcleod.blogspot.com/2008/09/miramichi-river-little-southwest-river.html
Friday, 12 September 2008. Miramichi River, Little Southwest River. The fish shook its head frantically trying to dislodge the irritation embedded in its jaw. I could see the fly was hooked squarely in the scissors, so for once I had been fast enough on the strike. Utterly delicious. for those of us who like meat that is. I was going to need help out of my waders! Salmon fishing is salmon fishing, but for me as the sun went down and I threw my last cast hoping to feel that shoulder jarring take I felt li...

Aardvark McLeod: Catching the bus..... but only just
http://aardvarkmcleod.blogspot.com/2008/10/catching-bus-but-only-just.html
Friday, 17 October 2008. Catching the bus. but only just. Roger Young has fished Alphonse Island in the Seychelles a number of times, but he recently had an extraordinary experience there:. The giant trevally (GT) grows to be by far the biggest of the several species of trevally that swim in the waters of the Indian Ocean. For some, its scientific name (caranx ignobilis) is a bit of a mouthful and catching a big one has been corrupted to ‘catching the bus’. Luckily, Dan, another guide who had been shadow...

Aardvark McLeod: July 2008
http://aardvarkmcleod.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Sunday, 6 July 2008. Sea Trout fishing on the Test. The other night I was lucky enough to be invited to fish the Testwood Pool on the lower Test for sea trout by Alistair Robjent of Robjents Tackle in Stockbridge. This is typical night time fishing which I have always found extremely exciting, and requires co ordination and stealth. so no doubt I was going to find this quite challenging! So, night time drills applied here as sea trout will spook easily, even at night. It is important to keep well bac...

The Latin American Fishing Co: September 2009
http://latinamericanfishing.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Monday, 28 September 2009. Bolivia Trip August 2009. In conjunction with Aardvark McLeod. The operators run a two lodge operation to take advantage of the different rivers. We discovered when we moved that the other rivers have been fishing really well for both dorado and the pacu, sometimes referred to as the freshwater permit. I had yet to see one of these fish, and out here they too grow to unusal sizes. Pacu have been taken to over 40lbs from these rivers! For more information, please click here.
