Something to Read: July 2007

http://abookstory.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Fragrance: The Story of Perfume from Cleopatra to Chanel. I have recently read a ton of books, and so I was faced with a dilemma - which would my kindly readers prefer to hear about - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows or Fragrance? I chose the latter because Harry Potter reviews already abound. This text, Fragrance by Edwin T. Morris. There are descriptions of discovering the various scent extraction techniques from still distilling. Lavendars), Jean-Marie Farina. When we did s...

Something to Read: Fledgling

http://abookstory.blogspot.com/2007/12/fledgling.html

Tuesday, December 04, 2007. Is really a fast and exciting read. It is the story of a young one, Shori who looses her family and is forced to build herself a new family. It is a vampire story. If I had known it was a vampire story before I started reading it, I would not have started. I am glad that I did not, for it is a great story and I would have missed out. I started it because it was written by Octavia Butler, an author that I have read a lot of. She is truly a great story teller. I like to read&#46...

Something to Read: The Hidden Forest

http://abookstory.blogspot.com/2007/11/hidden-forest.html

Saturday, November 03, 2007. When Jon Luoma wrote The Hidden Forest: The Biography of an Ecosystem. 1999), he opened new ways of thinking about our forests for many including me. Luoma writes of many of the living beings that make up a forest, not just the trees. Living adult trees are only one part. That work in symbiosis with the trees for mutual growth and health, and so many more beings. Luoma writes of the naturalists who study the forest, specifically Andrews. Something to Read: Thousand Cranes

http://abookstory.blogspot.com/2007/12/thousand-cranes.html

Thursday, December 27, 2007. Translated by Edward Seidensticker reads like a fleshed out poem. This is a story of a man (Kikuji) and his relationships with his deceased father and his father’s two mistresses. It is a delicately told tale illuminating human relations, a tale that can be transferred to a global stage. I read this as part of the Japanese Literature Challenge. And it is a great addition to my literary knowledge. If you are fortunate enough to read Japanese, there is the original version.

Something to Read: November 2007

http://abookstory.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 21, 2007. 2006) by Jasper Fforde is part of his Jack Spratt Investigates series. The first book, The Big Over Easy. Concerns the murder of Humpty Dumpty. In this book Detective Jack Spratt (who eats no fat), and Seargent Mary Mary investigate the death of Henrietta Hatchett, aka Goldilocks. Goldilocks visits three bears and is never seen again. It is just a simple nursery story, or is it? Nothing is ever straightforward and simple in the Nursery Crimes Division. I recently decided to ...

Now, one hundred juvenile delinquents - considered expendable by society - are being sent on a dangerous mission: to recolonize the planet.
