About the bike

Saturday, March 21, 2015. It's no secret that the Oppy - properly known as the Fleche Opperman All-Day Trial - is my favourite ride. There's a lot to like about the Oppy, the challenging distance, the night riding, the company of like-minded folk on a most enjoyable jaunt. This year was my sixth Oppy in Victoria, having completed in 2013. This year, the Tasmanian contingent in the famed Lancefield Lairs was doubled, with Hugh coming along for the ride as well. The scenery in Victoria is unlike that of Ta...

About the bike: 2014 annual report

http://aboutthebike.blogspot.com/2015/01/2014-annual-report.html

Sunday, January 04, 2015. 2014 wasn't my best year on the bike, but it was one of my most enjoyable. I tend to look back at the end of each year and the raw stats look like this: 4,359km in 215 hours for an average speed of 20.28km/h. I rode 188 times, with an average ride distance of 30km. My longest ride was 193km. Which was a record I wasn't going to equal thanks in part to a working trip to China. Excellent year. Amazing how the short rides add up. About the bike: Keep on Trucking

http://aboutthebike.blogspot.com/2015/01/keep-on-trucking.html

Sunday, January 18, 2015. In all its laden glory. Some of my early lighting experiments were not pretty. One of the bikes I have been neglecting a bit lately is my trusty old Surly Long Haul Trucker, which featured a fair bit more back in the early days of this blog – which I notice is now approaching 10 years old! Touring in South Australia. 312km so far this year. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Been doing the miles? Off The Beaten Path. Autumn 2016 Bicycle Quarterly. The Velo ORANGE Blog. Continui...

Saturday, May 17, 2014. I've been messing around with some story telling tools (aren't we blessed to live in such an age? Over at Creativist I've put together a short multimedia-rich page. On gravel riding in Tasmania. I hope you like it. 2238km so far this year. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Been doing the miles? Off The Beaten Path. Autumn 2016 Bicycle Quarterly. About the bike: Freeze thaw cycle

http://aboutthebike.blogspot.com/2014/09/freeze-thaw-cycle.html

Tuesday, September 16, 2014. A cold morning, still a good time for a ride. And when the warming rays of the rising sun hit, well it's all worthwhile. It was -2 degrees celcius this morning, not counting the windchill. Southern Tasmania sometimes finds out late that summer's on the way. It took a bit of thawing out, but was still well worth the early start. Im struggling to shake off some post-holiday weight gain. A few more mornings like this are in the works. Maybe some hills. 3648km so far this year.

Rider redux: Vale Richard Ballantine

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2013/06/vale-richard-ballentine.html

Getting back in the saddle. Tuesday, June 11, 2013. I was saddened to learn over the weekend that Richard Ballantine, author of "Richard's Bicycle Book" has died. Richard's Bicycle Book was an enormous influence on my riding and love and cycling, and I've been recalling fondly, afternoons spent planning rides, repairs and civil disobedience while turning it's pages. I hope he is turning the pedals even now. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Follow me on Twitter. View my complete profile.

Rider redux: November 2012

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Getting back in the saddle. Monday, November 12, 2012. Today I took the Paino out again this morning for a quick 50km and find that every time I ride it I like it more and more. So easy to push, even into a stiff wind with a worn freewheel and chain. I'm thinking that I will make it my Monday bike so I can continue to enjoy it. Tomorrow I've got a date for a ride up the gun club hill and then will be heading to the city to see Radiohead. Then its back to work on Wednesday. With ringing ears! The route up...

Rider redux: 3 Parks 200

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2013/05/3-parks-200.html

Getting back in the saddle. Monday, May 13, 2013. Following the Riverina Romp I decided to move my new bike purchase forward and took delivery of a Cervelo R3 last week. After a few tuning rides I felt confident to remove the saddle from my faithful Roubaix and attach it to the R3 for this weekends 3 Parks Ride, a 200 km brevet that is known for it's relentless pursuit of hills. I stopped for lunch at a Cafe in Picton and chatted with an older couple about wildflowers in Western Australia, while I enjoye...

Rider redux: Getting used to the pies

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2013/04/getting-used-to-pies.html

Getting back in the saddle. Wednesday, April 17, 2013. Getting used to the pies. After surviving my manflu I wasn't anticipating any heroic riding this weekend. In fact I had committed to some extracurricular work activities (which involved driving a mini loader) so was less than optimistic about riding too far. As I passed the 2 thirds point on the climb I was passed by a few of the faster triathaletes, but only a few and was soon at the Pie shop for the second time in a week, enjoying their wares and c...

Rider redux: December 2012

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Getting back in the saddle. Sunday, December 30, 2012. Finished off the festive 500 today with a relatively short 42km ride. So I will likely get another ride in tomorrow but so far its 512km with 5253m climbed and 22hours in the saddle. Links to this post. Monday, December 24, 2012. For the last year now I have been having fun with Strava. Today was the first day and hoping to get off to a good start, Ben and Harvey and I set off for a run up to the National Park, thinking to go for about 120kms or so&#...

Rider redux: February 2013

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Getting back in the saddle. Sunday, February 10, 2013. The quest for the perfect pair of shoes really knows no bounds and on Friday I picked up a pair of wide fit Bont Vaypors. They look the goods and a 70km ride on Saturday with poorly aligned cleats showed them to be quite comfortable though I am yet to heat mold them. They are much lighter than the current workhorse Sidis and very stiff. To celebrate I cleaned the Roubaix and even gave it a coat of wax. Shiny bike to match the shiny shoes. So as a new...

Rider redux: October 2012

http://riderredux.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Getting back in the saddle. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. As months on the bike go, October turned out to be a pretty good month. Especially considering that I wasn't supposed to be riding! Being on leave for half of the month is a big help, so much more time for longer rides and the weather has been great. So analysis of the month is 17 rides for 1003km and 10,855m of climbing. My best monthly effort for some time. Special Sunscreen Filter used. Mileage in Kilometers = 4782. Links to this post. The Illaw...

About the Binding

Saturday, December 27, 2014. Gold tooling with jigs. This post shows tooling on a full leather binding using gold foil. I used my tooling box that I made based on a box used by Michael Wilcox when he did a gold tooling demonstration at the Bookbinding 2000 Conference. The box gives you a flat and firm surface to support the cover while you are tooling and holds the rest of the book inside. My box is made from 1/2 inch birch plywood and is lined inside with felt to protect the book when it is placed inside.
