Welcome to the acupuncture-ecohouse. My name's Vivien. I work as an acupuncturist and my dream has always been to make a beautiful, unique space to practice acupuncture in. A friend suggested building a straw bale eco-house with rammed earth tyre foundations, straw bale walls and a reciprocating roof. It seemed like a good idea. The acupuncture-ecohouse is the result. The roof structure goes directly on top of the walls and it's weight creates more stability. The walls are then ready to render with a mixture of lime putty and sand. Liz strimmed the walls to get rid of any loose straw. Where there was uneveness in the walls we used cob to create a smoother surface. Cob is a mixture of mud, water, sand and straw. We could have used render to smooth out the bumps, but it is expensive whereas cob is close to free.

The building is heated by underfloor heating mats. They run on electricity and are very efficient, using a tiny amount of electricity to heat the whole building. Radiant heat is a lovely kind of heat to have and the building stays at a constant temperature all winter. The roof structure is a reciprocating roof. It's called that because all the beams sit on top of each other like a cardboard box with all it's flaps tucked into each other. Beam number one was held up out of the way by a large forked pole. It held together with just baling twine, but we strapped it with steel strapping, just for good measure. We got instructions for how to build this from Tony Wrench's book ' Building a Low Impact Roundhouse. ' ISBN 1-85623-019-8.
