Jacob A Tennessen – Adaptive Diversity
https://adaptivediversity.wordpress.com/author/adaptivediversity
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. Author: Jacob A Tennessen. Evolutionary geneticist, Unitarian Universalist, musician, nature lover, teacher, family man. Do these defenses even work? Nature, it has been said. Is red in tooth and claw. An endless struggle. When two species go at it for long enough, they even begin to adapt to each other. Each new weapon prompts a new counter-weapon in your enemy. This constant escalation, as illustrated in this Futurama gif. Is called a coevolutionary arms race.
A Biosphere of One – Adaptive Diversity
https://adaptivediversity.wordpress.com/2016/12/26/a-biosphere-of-one
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. December 26, 2016. January 21, 2017. A Biosphere of One. Even a seed can be an ark. Biodiversity is a hard concept to pin down. The word evokes a rich ecosystem brimming with plant and animal species. But is it just the number of species that matters, or their dissimilarity? Is the kaleidoscopic western ground snake. With myriad shades and stripe patterns, weighted the same as a population of genetically identical salamander clones. The genome of a mudpuppy. The fir...
Race Ed – Adaptive Diversity
https://adaptivediversity.wordpress.com/2016/12/10/race-ed
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. December 10, 2016. January 21, 2017. Does DNA cause racial differences in test scores? I got a lot of feedback from Race, Genetics and Taboo. Mostly positive, believe it or not. One particularly engaging e-mail conversation was with Jonathan Tweet, author of the fantastic evolutionary children’s book Grandmother Fish. Pinker points out that variation in parenting has little effect on variation in the behaviors and abilities of our offspring. Instead, most non-ge...
This Land is Your Land – Adaptive Diversity
https://adaptivediversity.wordpress.com/2016/11/12/this-land-is-your-land
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. November 12, 2016. January 21, 2017. This Land is Your Land. You are still welcome here. I spent the evening after the election repeatedly singing, and playing on the piano, the same song: Woody Guthrie’s This Land is Your Land. How could this happen? How could you carelessly sabotage this nice thing we were building? How could you reward the biggest bully on the playground, don’t you know that only encourages him? The word I keep coming back to is thoughtless.
About – Adaptive Diversity
https://adaptivediversity.wordpress.com/about
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. Welcome to Adaptive Diversity, the personal blog of Jacob A Tennessen. You may know me from my previous blog. Or my professional work as a biologist. In any case, I hope this site will be a home for ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. This blog is not very time-sensitive. Older posts are just as relevant and interesting as newer ones. To find something up your alley, I suggest browsing the list of posts. Which includes one-sentence summaries of each one.

Seeking Clarity – Bug & Bee
https://buggleboo.wordpress.com/2015/07/06/seeking-clarity
About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. I signed up for Blogging 101, and the first assignment is an introduction– who I am and why I’m here. It got me thinking about who I am, what I have to offer that might be useful in some way, or intriguing enough that strangers somewhere on the other side of an internet connection might want to read. A feminist, with ever-evolving political and social views. Always further left than most of the people around me though, and often more idealistic than pragmati...

We had picked up take out the night before and we’re planning a movie night for tonight (theaters have air conditioning! 6 Comments Add yours. 2015-07-31 at 10:21 am.
Trust the Process – Bug & Bee

About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. 8220;Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.” – Rainer Maria Rilke. I’m not sure what to call her. I had a Someone who told me that I “want the answers before [I’m] willing to ask the questions.” It’s true. Foodie Friday – More Zucchini! 15 Comments Add yours. 2015-07-30 at 12:57 pm.

About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. I haven’t disappeared, I promise. I’ve had an exceptionally difficult week and, while I’ve been composing a post in my head, I just haven’t had the energy to actually write it. Just wanted to pop in and let you all know I haven’t left the planet… or the blogosphere. 2 Comments Add yours. 2015-08-11 at 5:41 am. We’ve all been there! Liked by 1 person. 2015-08-12 at 7:53 pm. Back at it! – Bug & Bee
https://buggleboo.wordpress.com/2015/07/25/back-at-it
About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. The other day I got a membership to the student rec center on campus. I’ll have free access in the fall, once I’m officially a student again, but I was able to get a half term membership at the student price. This will allow me unlimited access between now and September 18. Today, I combined the treadmill at the gym with the Couch to 5k training app. I feel pretty good about that for the first day. Glad I was able to end it on a high note.🙂. 3 Comments Add yours.

Oof. – Bug & Bee
https://buggleboo.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/oof
About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. What a week, y’all. It’s been truly intense. The backdrop is one of general anxiety. There were a few high points and one very very low. It all added up to an exhausting and emotionally draining week, capped with a Monday Migraine that sent me home after working only 1 1/2 hours yesterday. One of the high points of the week, though, was on Thursday: Rachel’s 32nd birthday! Finally, yesterday I came home from work with a terrible headache that wasn’t respon...
Foodie Friday! – Bug & Bee
https://buggleboo.wordpress.com/2015/07/24/foodie-friday
About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. The Blogging 101 course that I’m in ends soon, one of the last assignments encouraged participants to create a regular feature for the blog. I’ve never been particularly good at remembering to come back to these themed events, but I’m willing to give it a go. Because 1. I love food and 2. I love alliteration, I decided to implement Foodie Friday. Friends, what I found has changed my life. Je ne sais quoi. Zucchini Corn and Queso Chowder. 5 Comments Add yours.
Sound Off – Bug & Bee
https://buggleboo.wordpress.com/2015/07/23/sound-off
About: 2 babies. 2 mamas. 10,000 thoughts. I was thinking about the point of my blog, and going back to this post. As well as this one. And thought that, in the spirit of community and consciousness raising, I’d love to hear from my readers. I like the idea of using my little corner of the internet for dialogue about all the minutiae in our lives that can feel overwhelming but too trivial to make a fuss over. So… here’s a chance to sound off! What’s going on in your life this week? 8 Comments Add yours.

Adaptive Diversity – ideas both polymorphic and beneficial
Ideas both polymorphic and beneficial. Seeing Russia from my House. The ptarmigan of peace? I’m encountering a lot of anxiety about Russia these days. Maybe it’s because our recent election turned out to be triumph of Kremlin meddling. Or it might be that the insecure man-child they helped install is now threatening to revive the nuclear arms race. Could Russia end up digging its fingers further into American soil? I attended two years of high school in Ouzinkie. Of the larger islands. Everything com...
