Perfection and Perspective | Sarah Defies Gravity

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. If there’s one thing I wish I had been told when Sarah was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, it would be that ignorant people are everywhere and that their ignorance is the gift that just keeps on giving. One of the things I worried most about when Sarah was diagnosed was how I would see her. Was I going to be able to love her as much? The answer, it turned out, would be yes…with conditions. Are there c...

World Down Syndrome Day: Just the Facts, Ma’am | Sarah Defies Gravity
https://sarahdefiesgravity.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/world-down-syndrome-day-just-the-facts-maam
The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. World Down Syndrome Day: Just the Facts, Ma’am. Today, March 21st, is World Down Syndrome Day. Why March 21st? Because Down Syndrome (or T21) is a chromosomal defect where three copies of the 21st chromosome are present. 3 copies of the 21st chromosome=3/21. Get it? It’s also an excuse for Dadad to dress Sarah in his alumni colors of yellow and blue (can you guess where. What is Down Syndrome? Yes a...

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. Down Syndrome Awareness and the future of Sarah Defies Gravity. So, 31 for 21 is almost over and I admit that I didn’t put forth one single post for it. Why? Well…the biggest reason is that we’ve been busy and that there are other things on my mind, so I just didn’t have the inclination. The second is slightly more selfish. And lazy. What does that say about us as a society? Are great communication ...

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. The Story That Started It All. Originally posted at http:/ www.babycenter.com. On September 13, 2011). I’ve heard it said that people come into our lives for a reason. Bringing something we must learn, and we are lead to those who help us most to grow if we let them. And we help them in return. Well I don’t know if I believe that’s true. But I know I’m who I am today because I knew you. I felt uneas...

A valuable life | Sarah Defies Gravity

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. As many people know, I am pro choice, and staunchly so. I believe that women should be wholly and singularly responsible for the choices pertaining to their body, including making decisions about whether to continue a pregnancy. And that includes making choices pertaining to prenatal diagnoses of special needs like Down Syndrome. People with Down Syndrome are, first and foremost, people. They ha...

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. One and One-Half Wandering Onlies. With apologies to Paul Simon for jacking his song lyrics like that. It hit me today (okay, yesterday…) that I am, in fact, an only child. Does it make me sad that she’ll never have a sibling? The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. What Down Syndrome can do for you. Six months ago today–half a year ago! 8211;I became, in a mixed blessing, the father of a little girl with an extra chromosome who changed my life in a big way. If you’ve never read the story. Of the day Sarah was born, you totally should. But tonight I’m not thinking about the day Sarah was born. I’m thinking about what it’s like. 1 Set your expectations as high a...

Spreading the Word to end “The Word” | Sarah Defies Gravity

The Story That Started It All. What one little chromosome taught me about love, life, and defying gravity. Spreading the Word to end “The Word”. You know that adage “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”? Words are some of the most powerful weapons there are. Words have started wars, incited violence, and caused people–innocent people–to harm or even kill themselves. Words hurt, period. And that includes the R-word. Bit as much as anyone else. Spread the word to end the word.
