Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Thursday, December 11, 2014. Sometimes an Unimaginable Nomination. Today, the screenplay for The Imitation Game. Has reaped a Golden Globe nomination one of five for the film, bestowed by the same taste-makers who famously yukked all the way through Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. On this auspicious occasion, I set aside the The Imitation Game. Since this already-indelible locution is apparently but one gleaming face of a multi-karat screenplay,...

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Sunday, January 04, 2015. Celebrating Cinematic Anniversaries in 2015. New Year's has always been my favorite holiday. I was born on October 9 but due on October 1, and if you dial that back nine months, you see I'm not kidding about "always." Even before I gleaned this tidbit, and before the ritualized annual viewing of When Harry Met Sally. This year, I'm reviving that habit. Am I aware that I never finish website projects? As crucial a yea...

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Tuesday, September 06, 2011. Visions of Love: The Fall 2011 Movie Season. Regular readers know that I like to kick off the Fall season with a ranked rundown of what I can't wait to see, what I'm glad to see, what I'll see if I'm somehow forced into it, and what I'm dead set on avoiding. With all the September festivals revving up, including Venice. And Telluride at present and Toronto, New York, and Chicago. We Need To Talk About Kevin. I've ...

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Top 10 World Premieres of 2014. For some context on this list, or here. For its companion list. Stay tuned for #1-#8! You know what Clint Eastwood's movie about the "most lethal sniper in American history" lacks even one of? Never reduces these, even as its hurtling momentum, its inductive approach to character, and the exigencies of battle preclude it from flaunting its own complexity or apologizing for its comprom...

ParaNorman (Chris Butler and Sam Fell, 2012, USA). Links to this post. Les Miserables anticipation fatigue. I'm entering that exhaustion phase of film anticipation that comes when a movie has been promoted for what seems like eons. To be honest, I was more than a little excited that. Was finally coming to the big screen. I've also been more than a little nervous that the director is Tom Hooper, since I found. More than a little annoying. Links to this post. Worst Comedies of All Time. Also, it's not cont...

How to Train Your Dragon (Chris Sanders and Dean DuBlois, 2010). Another overpraised mainstream movie I didn't get, I suppose. I thought it was a big boring mess. The animation feels as wooden and lifeless as the inconsequential plot. It occurs to me that the one curious thing about the movie is there weren't any adult female characters. I didn't believe the relationship between the kid and the dragon so much. And I guess I didn't really care about any of it. C-. Links to this post. Links to this post.
