Movies, criticism and their pleasures. Archive for the ‘Book Reviews’. Review: Sex, or the Unbearable (Lauren Berlant and Lee Edelman). January 01, 2014. The dialogue between critical theorists Lauren Berlant and Lee Edelman in. Sex, or the Unbearable. Is crucial for anyone who, like me, just doesn’t get Lee Edelman. Edelman has gained notoriety in critical circles for his radically antisocial position in his 2006 book. And “Theories of Close Reading in Socially Motivated Criticism”. No Comments →.

Movies, criticism and their pleasures. Best Shot: The Wizard of Oz. March 05, 2013. I did not grow up with. The Wizard of Oz. Sit on that for a second: like. The Wizard of Oz. Feels like one of those movies that stands in for an entire mythology entrenched within the American childhood imaginary, rather than a movie that produced that mythology in the first place. How could one escape it? Yet not growing up in middle-class America meant that I wasn’t exposed to that rite of passage where. The Wizard of Oz.

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog: Sometimes an Unimaginable Nomination

http://blog.nicksflickpicks.com/2014/12/sometimes-unimaginable-nomination.html

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Thursday, December 11, 2014. Sometimes an Unimaginable Nomination. Today, the screenplay for The Imitation Game. Has reaped a Golden Globe nomination one of five for the film, bestowed by the same taste-makers who famously yukked all the way through Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. On this auspicious occasion, I set aside the The Imitation Game. Since this already-indelible locution is apparently but one gleaming face of a multi-karat screenplay,...

Nick's Flick Picks: The Blog. A film blog under the influence. Sunday, January 04, 2015. Celebrating Cinematic Anniversaries in 2015. New Year's has always been my favorite holiday. I was born on October 9 but due on October 1, and if you dial that back nine months, you see I'm not kidding about "always." Even before I gleaned this tidbit, and before the ritualized annual viewing of When Harry Met Sally. This year, I'm reviving that habit. Am I aware that I never finish website projects? As crucial a yea...

Stay tuned for #1-#8! You know what Clint Eastwood's movie about the "most lethal sniper in American history" lacks even one of? How to Train Your Dragon (Chris Sanders and Dean DuBlois, 2010). Another overpraised mainstream movie I didn't get, I suppose. I thought it was a big boring mess. The animation feels as wooden and lifeless as the inconsequential plot. It occurs to me that the one curious thing about the movie is there weren't any adult female characters. I didn't believe the relationship between the kid and the dragon so much. And I guess I didn't really care about any of it. C-. Links to this post. Links to this post.

The blog of author Nancy Livingstone. Big Pharma, Friend or Enemy? June 5, 2015. My “Big Pharma”. Everyday it seems we are subjected to yet another new study that insists we must do this or that to better our health. Sadly, so may accept these announcements as total truth without doing any background research on the subject. Being constantly bombarded by media, we tend to start believing everything we hear. Since it’s coming from the news, it has to be true. Does it? We should all be aware of the fact th...
