My Driveway is My Teacher. February 23, 2014. After a few hours of work in the house, I came back outside in late afternoon. The cold was setting in. All that runoff from the midday thaw just froze into place. The entire driveway was slick. It wasn’t ice, it was more like a sticky film. We have been liberated from that old house, and its patterns, and its memories. Despite all the problems we still have, it feels like the three of of us are a family, setting up house. It’s financially inefficient, economically irrational, but there are other standards, and I seem to have hit on one that matters. And I got over it, for the moment.

You’d think you’d know what the triggers are–an image of the cause of death, an ICU room–but those things I can handle, in their odd familiarity.
