History of AIDS Walk Philly. In 1987, volunteers from Philadelphia’s gay and lesbian community center, Penguin Place, decided to organize a walk-a-thon to support area AIDS agencies and to raise public awareness about the disease. The Philadelphia Region's first AIDS Walk raised $33,000. History of AIDS Walk Philly. There are lots of ways to participate in AIDS Walk Philly! The Walk is held on the scenic Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park. Walkers are encouraged to raise at least $50 so they can receive their official AIDS Walk/Run Philly 5K t-shirt. Our 5K route is USATF certified and chip timed! All runners are required to pay $50 registration fee, but are encouraged to get sponsors and raise even more. You can still register, fundraise, and even join a team as a Virtual Walker!
