Right by the Medway – John Ward: Foundation and Labour
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2015/07/foundation-and-labour.html
Friday, 24 July 2015. If the great science fiction author Isaac Asimov had been born about fifty years later than he was, and lived in England, I suspect he might have written his Foundation and Empire. Episode that revolves around General Bel Riose with this nation's Labour party in mind. That starts with the Gordon Brown moves to oust Blair and take over, the inevitable failure to win the (long-awaited) next national election – and the almost equally inevitable failure to have gone for an electio...

Right by the Medway – John Ward: December 2014
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Monday, 29 December 2014. As I (and a few others) have been saying for a year or more, once the autumn party conference season was over, the coalition partners have been going their own ways in the run-up to next May's General Election. Thus it comes as no surprise to find 'big name' Liberal Democrats putting out their party's lines, and indeed it is what I'd expect them to do. What he has apparently been saying completely contradicts his (very public) stance while he was in that former office and, then, ...

Thursday, 26 February 2015. Medway Budget Council Meeting 2015 – Actuals. Well, that was it. I didn't stay until the end, only until the Budget item was dealt with (including convolutions caused by amendments) and voted upon, with the usual (and expected) result: it passed and the amendments were defeated. So, was the process the same as in previous years? Cllr Alan Jarrett (Con) – 50 mins 45 secs. Cllr Vince Maple (Lab) – 28 mins 48 secs. Cllr Geoff Juby (Lib Dem) – 6 mins 40 secs. An interesting 'facto...

Right by the Medway – John Ward: Patchy on the Patch
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2015/07/patchy-on-patch.html
Friday, 24 July 2015. Patchy on the Patch. It's good to see that Labour councillors are still occasionally getting things done on their patch. It's now seemingly such a rare occurrence that they almost make a song and dance out of it, publicising it in unexpected places, as here. As some reading this will know, I was doing this sort of thing all the time, more-or-less single handed for years, when I was on the Council here; and have continued to do so since moving to this largely-neglected (for ma. Overa...

Right by the Medway – John Ward: November 2014
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, 29 November 2014. Yes, that title sounds like an old song. I don't write about UKIP (the United Kingdom Independence Party) very much, partly because I don't like to give them the oxygen of publicity, but also because I am fairly relaxed about them. I know that their time will pass, as it generally does for cult-of-personality parties (those revolving around, and dominated by, their leader and that leader's personality) such as Robert Kilroy-Silk and his defunct Veritas. Until Nigel changed it ...

Right by the Medway – John Ward: Strike Out Jobs
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2015/08/strike-out-jobs.html
Thursday, 6 August 2015. The current strike on the London Underground displays all that is wrong with such actions, especially in today's world. The 'tube' drivers receive a very generous income relative to most others, a ridiculously extended leave allowance – based on some dubious psychology – yet demand more. And yet, all many (perhaps most by now) do all day is sit in a cab and press a few buttons. This latest action (inaction? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). You must have a browser that supports...

Sunday, 31 August 2014. Star Trek Continues – Episode 2. I filed this away a few months ago, unsure whether the series was really continuing, and (mainly because of my health issues) failed to follow it up. Episode 3 has appeared, some weeks ago, so it looks like 'Continues' continues! The second of these Vic Mignona stories is again in the vein of the original Star Trek. With Vic's Kirk being near enough spot-on as before. Even the story, and the way it is handled, are classic Trek. Links to this post.

Right by the Medway – John Ward: It Points Both Ways
http://wwwjohn-m-ward.blogspot.com/2015/06/it-points-both-ways.html
Friday, 19 June 2015. It Points Both Ways. I am currently reminded of the fictitious mayor Salvor Hardin's epigram which tells us that "the atom blaster is a good weapon, but it can point both ways." ('Foundation' by Isaac Asimov). What has triggered this line of thought? So, what is the relevance of Salvor Hardin's saying? It is that, in their attempt to make Labour the focus of the population's attention – and specifically at the expense of the other political parties – they unavoidably exp...Liz Kenda...

Right by the Medway – John Ward: October 2014

Friday, 31 October 2014. Circle You, Circle You. Here is a scary music video for Hallowe'en, performed by Ashe (a.k.a. "ashestoashesjc"), featuring images of Vocaloid avatars. It's quite effective and really needs no further introduction or explanation from me. Links to this post. Song of the Carcasses. This is the live performance at Kansai of Hold, Release, Rakshasa and Carcasses. Links to this post. Thursday, 9 October 2014. This ten-minute video is actually quite instructive about the two sides of th...
