In the veg plot – July | alder & ash

https://alderandash.wordpress.com/2014/07/07/in-the-veg-plot-july

A permaculture plot in Suffolk. In the veg plot – July. July 7, 2014. In Garden and growing. Time for this month’s veg plot update. We’ve not been eating nearly as much as usual from the veg plot this year, thanks mainly to pigeons, which have been a menace. They somehow managed to get in through the fort I’ve built around the beans, and have eaten all but one plant. Grrrr. This little update is for the Garden Share Collective. Hosted by Liz from Strayed Table. Pear – no idea what sort! It’s going ...

Say No to the Mow | alder & ash

https://alderandash.wordpress.com/2014/06/19/say-no-to-the-mow

A permaculture plot in Suffolk. Say No to the Mow. June 19, 2014. The weather is warming up and the grass is starting to really grow. And grow. At the weekend, the air is filled with that sound of Summer, the gentle hum of lawnmowers in the distance. Why do we do it? All those hours spent trudging behind the mower, not to mention the petrol, and the loss of habitat. So while I do like a little bit of nice stripey lawn, this year I am proud to be joining in with Plantlife’s Say No to the Mow. Feel free to...

A permaculture plot in Suffolk. Last Chance Elderflower Cordial. June 23, 2014. Lemons ready for zesting and slicing. Then we added heaps of caster sugar, some boiling water, and a little citric acid to help it last longer. The mix is now steeping for 24 hours, before we strain it and bottle it. I’ve included the full recipe below. Elderflowers – mostly bug free? How much sugar…? Here’s the recipe I used:. Last Chance Elderflower Cordial. 3 to 6 lemons – sliced. 15 litres boiling water. Strain through a ...

On 19th January 2014 we became the custodians of plot 23D. Our mission was simple: to dig, to grow, to harvest, to eat. Join us as we endeavour to cultivate our very first allotment. Support us as we battle weed intrusions, aphid invasions and the inclement British weather. Stand with us as we give intensive farming the finger, flying the flag for sustainability. Setting the scene for the autumn garden - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/10/02/autumn-garden

October 2, 2013. Setting the scene for the autumn garden. This weekend felt like summer again, it was sunny and warm and as well as starting my big autumn garden clean up I also enjoyed spending time outside relaxing, tending to the last of the harvest and noticing the changing shapes and shades of autumn. I’m hoping for a sunny October, the reality might not be so good but I still enjoy the plants that continue to thrive despite the changes in the weather. The persicaria provides great ground cover and ...

My Mediterranean inspired container garden - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/09/03/my-mediterranean-inspired-container-garden

September 3, 2013. My Mediterranean inspired container garden. I love container gardening because I can create gardens in the smallest of spaces and I can easily change my displays as often as I want. I first posted about my little container garden. At the front of my house in May, when I had a really colourful display of spring bulbs in containers around my front door. Inspired by the planting schemes and container gardens I saw during my holiday in Provence,. These classic red pelargoniums. Since my po...

Welcome to the jungle - the garden has taken off! - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/07/30/welcome-to-the-jungle-garden

July 30, 2013. Welcome to the jungle – the garden has taken off! Since my last post from the garden. In late June/early July things have developed drastically! While I’ve been away on holiday the plants have grown, or should I say over-grown in the remarkable British weather! Adam was a little worried that the sprinkler system he set up would not work…but it did. We returned to an abundance of foliage, crops and what I can only describe as a jungle in the pumpkin patch! The first of many. I’m full ...

Back from the snow and into the snow... - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/01/20/back-from-the-snow-and-into-the-snow

January 20, 2013. Back from the snow and into the snow…. Surprise that we suddenly get a massive dump of the fluffy white stuff just when everyone was starting to enjoy the unusually mild winter! I’ve had a wonderful holiday in Andorra, hitting the ski slopes, where there was a slight lack of snow (but enough to ski and snowboard) and I must say that coming back was a REAL downer. Wow! 8216; series. I’m absolutely no expert but people keep asking me what they should/could be doing in their gard...As well...

The allotment in June - what's growing on?! - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/06/03/the-allotment-in-may-whats-growing-on

June 3, 2013. The allotment in June – what’s growing on? The weather has been amazing! I hope it’s been good with you too. As a result of this I’ve been busy in my greenhouse, garden and veggie patches and I’ve neglected blogging for some time. I’ve literally been getting home from work, gardening and sleeping for weeks now. Great work life balance, but not so great for the work blog life balance! However, I’ve been given a bit of a kick start back into things via Michelle at Veg Plotting. The tulips are...

Notes on a Garden: March 2013

http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Monday, 11 March 2013. We decided to buy a couple more chickens last weekend as we're only getting one good egg from our other two at the moment. Fudge hardly ever lays an egg with a decent shell, so it is being eaten before we can get to it. There were lots of chickens to choose from:. Here are the two we chose, Bilbo and Frodo - yes, I know Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are male, but hobbits aren't human. That da...

Notes on a Garden: Adding a Splash of Spring Colour

Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Thursday, 24 February 2011. Adding a Splash of Spring Colour. What a lovely day it was today; quite Spring-like. I had a thin jumper on, but didn't need a coat. The birds were singing and calling out to each other and for a while I was serenaded by a dunnock. He was quite close, but annoyingly I didn't have my camera to hand. The bed on the other side of the path has colour, but needs a good tidy up. I look f...

Notes on a Garden: The last of my Spring cabbages

http://notesonagarden-karin.blogspot.com/2009/06/last-of-my-spring-cabbages.html

Notes on a Garden. Gardening with nature in mind. Books I've Found Useful. Spring in the Garden. Sunday, 21 June 2009. The last of my Spring cabbages. Things are growing quite well in the garden at the moment. I just harvested the last of my pointed cabbages, which had been attacked a bit by a couple of slugs and some tiny green maggoty things. However, this was the worst one, most of the others only showed slug and snail damage on the outer leaves, which we don't eat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
