Are you pondering what I'm pondering? Day 6 – Sadness. September 3, 2014. I keep decorating my classroom and my poor 6th grade students already thought there were enough posters on the walls! Are you pondering what I'm pondering? Day 2 – The walls. August 27, 2014. This is what I saw when I entered my classroom this morning:. Downstairs I went, plugged it in and worked on my table signs. I took the table signs from one of my favorite sites, Technology Rocks Seriously. And turned them into circles to sit in the center of the fans. Still clueless on the other two…. MT|SM: December 2013
http://mtsmc.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 11, 2013. I gone a clear month and a half without writing anything here. I just haven't had anything profound to say. This is certainly not an original blog post. Bloggers fall in and out of writing spurts all the time. But I'm trying to figure out why. Why have I had a general disinterest lately in reading twitter and checking my reader? What's going on with me that I'm just not finding the value that I used to? Reason #2: General contentment with my practice. It's also nice that my ...
MT|SM: Tennis Balls
http://mtsmc.blogspot.com/2013/10/tennis-balls.html
Thursday, October 24, 2013. Along with coaching, I captain two men's tennis teams. It's pretty cool. We have a team of 12-16 guys and on any given night we play eight: three doubles matches and two singles matches. We have a fun team and we (surprise, surprise) pretty much always go out and celebrate afterward, win or lose. And by celebrate I mean go out and drink beer. Our latest favorite watering hole is the Groveland Tap. Excellent beer selection and a good happy hour menu. And every other ball manufa...

Sunday, March 30, 2014. Flipped Classroom (the first 10 minutes of class). I am really experimenting with the first 10 minutes of class lately. It is my 10 minutes of whole group time. On Mondays, we play "the White Board Game" for state test review and to keep something consistent. Any other day is up for grabs. One of my favorite activities to open class with is My Favorite No. If you have never seen the video on Teaching Channel, you should watch it. Pretty cool stuff. ( Here. Last week with the 7th g...
The Math Hatter: We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals
http://cjsieling.blogspot.com/2015/02/were-going-on-square-hunt-simplifying.html
Friday, February 6, 2015. We're Going on a Square Hunt: Simplifying Radicals. The class spent a week exploring the Pythagorean Theorem. After creating a need with the students to handle square roots, on Friay we went over how to simplify them. This topic has always been a bit dry and never quite landed with the students. I have always talked about trying to find perfect squares and use those to break down the number. So as the class entered today I played this video. We're going on a square hunt. My mini...

But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. -Albert Einstein. Thursday, July 31, 2014. My kids currently use these three things only:. This is their SBG portfolio. Or all their graded work. Nothing else but graded work goes in here otherwise it runs the risk of losing value and getting messy. It does not leave the room. What about things like worksheets? Just practice that I don't think will ever end up being a good reference. It's ...
