Before New Ash Green - the projects that influenced its design and concept. Parkleys, Hamm Common, Richmond Surrey, 1954. New Ash Green - Background. All about the concept and development of New Ash Green. For many years SPAN had professed an ambition to become involved in a large scale comprehensive development. With the financial assistance of The Royal London Mutual Insurance Society Ltd, a plot of land that had once formed part of both North Ash Farm and New House Farm was bought in 1961. All about the key players in SPAN. Leslie Bilsby - Joint Managing Director SPAN. Bilsby was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire. He attended evening classes at Regent Street Polytechnic were he studied painting. However his interests turned towards architecture and design and he went to work for a builders merchants in London.
