Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. Now the good news. August 10, 2015. After yesterday’s waaahh-fest about pitiful me and the downy mildew slaughter of cucumbers, it seems like a brighter story is in order. Most gardens turn out to be mixtures of failure, partial successes, and whoopee. For me the whoopee this year comes from the tomatoes. It’s been work, but so far so good. Cherokee Purple dead weight. German Johnsons almost there. Which means time for the freezer…. How good ...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 16, 2015. The carrots that started out their lives sprouting under a piece of plywood came of age. Of course there were a few that looked like fat six-legged orange snowmen, but I’m very pleased with the harvest. About 35 lbs. worth; more than we have room to store. The orange snowmen didn’t make the cut, but they’ll go to a friend’s horses. After pulling the carrot crop, I fired up the chicken tiller in that spot. Awesome. It’s ...

Tutorials Etc – HerbMother
http://herbmother.com/tutorials-etc
As previously stated, I don’t really do rules and recipes. But here is a revolving, evolving catalogue of a few of my experiments from over the years as of Feb 2013. I’m terrible at tutorials, so these posts are more adventures in crafting with some loose instruction. Please deviate and change at will to make them your own! And, as always, let your senses be your guide. Calming cooling pops for summer. For the love of vinegar. Turmeric Honey for Neck Tension. C is for catnip. For the love of chamomile.

downy mildew: trouble in paradise | vegetablurb
https://vegetablurb.wordpress.com/2015/08/10/downy-mildew-trouble-in-paradise
Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. Downy mildew: trouble in paradise. August 10, 2015. Right or wrong, it’s not always easy for gardeners to talk about the things that aren’t growing well. But sometimes those very things teach the most indelible lessons. From the beginning my cucumber plants have had a rough go this year. The rains came and stayed for a month. Now the plants are positively sickly. A prompt and thorough answer came the next day; Downy Mildew. Arg. Gardens aren&...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. October 24, 2015. It’s been a mild fall here so far; hopefully I didn’t just jinx Michigan. Only a couple of nights where it got below freezing, and generally pretty nice weather for late October. Makes for happy lettuce. October 22, 2015. When I was younger, back when I could remember things and bend my wrists without flinching, I believed that my favorite time of year was Fall. All these years later it’s still my favorite season&#...Then it...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 15, 2015. I’m pretty happy. Somehow the sad, downy mildew-ed pickling cucumber vines stayed alive long enough to produce another batch of cucumbers. So yesterday morning I grabbed the cukes, dill, garlic, grapevine leaves and jalapeños form the garden and knocked out a few jars of hot dill spears. I cherish these pickles in the dead of winter. Hot and crunchy and full of vavoom on a cold, snowy night. The first buckwheat cover crop tha...

Four decades of organic vegetable gardening and barely a clue. August 13, 2015. Buckwheat ready to go under. A big meal for a little bug. Harvest time is in the smell of the air and in the cool nights. My favorite time of the year (along with spring, summer, fall and all but a month and a half of winter). I continually struggle to find the right balance of crops to grow for storage and crops to grow for fresh eating. Haven’t found it. Probably won’t. This entry was posted in vegetable garden. A Millennial's Journey Into Meditation and Mindfulness. Why Do I Meditate? How Meditation Helped My Insomnia. Okay, I’m going to close my eyes and lay perfectly still. Then I should be able to fall sleep right away. Nope That didn’t work. My body is tired but my mind won’t stop thinking. Maybe counting sheep will help. One sheeptwo sheepthree sheep ugh this is not working. I need to sleep! This is SO frustrating! Because of my overthinking tendencies, the nights could get very long. This practice helped ...
