Alzheimer’s is the leading cause, followed by multi-infarct dementia and others such as fronto-temporal dementia, Lewy-body disease, and Creutzfeld-Jacob. Korsakoff’s is caused by alcoholism. Where Caring Comes Home. A Thief in the Night. While research is ongoing, there is no known cure of Alzheimer's, the causes of this disease still are veiled to us. If we can’t yet protect against it, we can still recognize and diagnosis it when it is present. The research continues, and is narrowing down the causes. Maybe someday soon we'll be able to finally cure and eliminate Alzheimer’s. As of now, we can only slow it’s relentless taking.

The diagnosis of a dementia, by itself, does not imply that the person has an irreversible or even a progressive disorder. Some disorders that cause dementia are stable (i.e., the person doesn't get worse over time), and some are reversible (i.e., the person improves over time, especially with treatment).
