Martin Eke: A Bit of Housekeeping
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-bit-of-housekeeping.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Friday, February 13, 2015. A Bit of Housekeeping. Is an online journal of Portland-area women writers, and I have a non-fiction piece in the Winter 2015 Issue! You can read it here. And then have a look around. I will be participating in a reading at the Multnomah County Central Library. But I still thought we should have a poem, so here's something from Aaron Belz's Glitter Bomb. In a given situation. Your objective should be. To act as much like yourself.

Martin Eke: The Laborer is Worthy of His Wages
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-laborer-is-worthy-of-his-wages.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Thursday, December 4, 2014. The Laborer is Worthy of His Wages. It's started raining in earnest, so we are knee-deep in kitchen helpers. Being in out of the rain at recess is what most of them are after, but there can be more material rewards for helping as well. Becky (our kitchen lead) has very specific ideas about the dispensing of chance tickets. Students are not supposed to ask for them. "I like to surprise. You," she tells the new helpers. And when she...

Martin Eke: July 2015

We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Saturday, July 11, 2015. Post 500: Habits Old and New. I am one of the least self-disciplined people you may ever meet. As much as I earnestly want to get a healthy amount of sleep every night, stop wasting huge chunks of my day on the internet, keep my house clean, and institute age-appropriate responsibilities for my children, I very seldom manage to do any of those things. That might not seem like a big deal, but I live in a land where even casual walkers...

Martin Eke: A Kitchen Christmas
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2015/01/a-kitchen-christmas.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Monday, January 19, 2015. This Christmas, I would have loved to have had a fancy party to go to. I wanted to get dressed up and drink a glass of bubbly on the company dime. I had hoped Shaun's work might do something nice, but they didn't have a party that spouses were invited to. Last year I was a little nervous about participating in a gift exchange with a man who wears a t-shirt with a howling wolf and an American flag on it without a trace of irony.

Martin Eke: June 2014
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Sunday, June 15, 2014. My dad passed away on April 5 this year, about two weeks before what would have been his 66th birthday. My sister and I knew that his lungs had not been doing their job for quite some time, and we knew he would not "get better," but his final decline was swifter than we expected. Here's what I think of when I think of my dad:. 1 He loved the ocean and the natural world. See that student ID card up there? One of Dad's favorite spots to ...

Martin Eke: My Window
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2014/09/my-window.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Saturday, September 20, 2014. When I signed up to be a lunch lady, no one told me there would be self-serve condiments. It is a horror show. I didn't know that tiny five year-old hands would grapple with adult-sized ketchup dispensers. I had never laid eyes on a five-gallon bucket of ranch dressing, or realized how quickly 160 (or so) kids can tear through said bucket when left to their own devices. She says the next day. "Wash this! That's not very polite,"...

Martin Eke: December 2013
http://martinseke.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
We've got a lot of what it takes to get along. Monday, December 30, 2013. It's been a strange few days. We celebrated Christmas at our house this year. That part was not strange, but nice. My mom and Shaun's folks joined us for crab bisque and church on Christmas Eve, and presents and roast beef on Christmas Day. Our neighbor's house is on fire," said Shaun. I. Would have said it with an exclamation point, but it takes more than a fire across the street to get an exclamation point out of Shaun. I took a ...
